I see that Sturmey Archer now do a competitor to the - ever popular with recumbenteers - SRAM Dual-Drive, called, less catchily, the CS-RF3. Details here http://www.sturmey-archer.com/products/hubs/cid/8/id/58

In the past I have been a critic of the ferocious price of the Dual-Drive compared with a 3-Speed hub or a cassette hub, especially of the disc-brake-ready version. Will the CS-RF3 be better value? I don't know yet - does anyone else know? I do know that Kevin Ablitt, of this parish, is stocking them and will have disc-brake compatible versions at some point.

One advantage S/A has over SRAM is that it is compatible with standard left and right derailleur shifters.

Spotted that self same hub recently. I was considering one for my QNT (or for a new-build, but that's further off). I don't ride enough for light weight or efficiency to be a big issue (actually, maybe efficiency is more important for me than for someone fitter ;-)

I find the front dérailleur difficult to use (when slowing dramatically for an incline, the idea of 'easing off' to change down is challenging), so if the SA hub will change under (some) load it looks to be a good option. I recall the 'old' 3 speed hubs did change under load, but how long they last I'm not sure - I can also apply a bit more load than when I was a child !

They also look good for front wheel drive bikes (the new-build, though it is not a build yet) as the dérailleur hanger can be shorter.

Now all I need is time ... and spare money !

I've ridden 3x7s and they don't seem too draggy and of course the middle ratio is direct. Some figures I saw in 'Human Power' suggested 3-speed hubs are pretty efficient, especially in direct drive.

Crikey, see what you mean about the price of a Dual Drive hub Shocked  I'm fond of the one on my Grasshopper, both in terms of use and looks (clean looking front chain run / cranks), although the rattling when coasting down bumpy roads is a bit annoying, and I've heard of people breaking them :(  ('Hot' shifting under power is feasible, but I suspect it does the internals no favours.) 
The SA hub is 120g heavier, though, has slightly smaller range (177% vs 186%), is only available in 36H and uses the traditional SA chain (I prefer SRAM's click-box).  The price does help though :)  Look forward to reading reviews ;)
