Very often the British way is to subdivide an already narrow road with a white line and put a very rough surface of a different color that rattles your teeth if you try and ride on it or gives you multiple punctures because all the s**t gathers in it. Then when you try and ride the white line because it's reasonably smooth it brings you into conflict with the car drivers who object to you being on the road because you don't pay any car tax.
We have a long way to go to become a cycle friendly country that's for sure. All the best. Roy
