It turns out the cable that failed was one of the old ones that came with the timing kit, not one of the slightly beefier ones bought since. Hence it is of unknown age and provenance and probably well due for retirement.

I'm not sure I would have relished riding under a dangling cable in last Saturday's gale, even if anyone had remembered to bring the necessary gantries and guy ropes required to suspend the thing. The cables are pretty robust and if one or two need replacing every few years then it's a reasonable price to pay.

The BPCC were taking this approach for the Shenington 24 hour race, with a gantry above the track with traffic lights mounted on it, as well as various cables.

Seems to me that while that's perhaps the ideal solution, it has the fundamental problem that to do it safely requires a structure that takes time to build and strike, and is going to be awkward to transport (even if you're just stringing a caternary wire between two poles, you need poles and weighted bases). You also need even longer cables, to account for the extra vertical distance.

A simpler (FCVO simpler) approach would be to have a second RFID reader on the far side of the track, and either use a dirt-cheap cat5 cable to connect to it, or use WiFi and a suitably beefy battery. The system supports this, though I'm not sure I'd want to...

I'd suggest that the current approach and considering the across-track cable to be a wear item is probably more sensible. It might even be worth keeping a spare in reserve?

Incidentally, I found this nick in the insulation:

Wasn't easy to photograph, but I can see copper inside. That'll do it for water ingress.

Entirely possible, the system certainly has enough range to reach the road outside.

Actually, my Co-Wheels membership card is RFID, maybe it's that? I'll have to try it next time the system's set up.

Another likely suspect is the proliferation of miscellaneous previously-loved computer equipment.
