I'd definitely be interested in doing this, most likely as part of a team but a 24hr epic oddly appeals...

There must be something that riding a Rapto does to the brain I'm also considering doing it.

I also know I've had a little too much beer as I type this I can hear voices in my head suggesting 24hrs solo would be good challenge.

Serious question - Camping, before / during / after???? might be essential as if I do 24hrs I will need to sleep not try to do a 100 + mile drive home afterwards.

I'm not sure about camping before or after the event and can't think of any local camp sites.
There certainly is a lot of space nearby, so if there's an interest, it may be possible to set up a camp site, as is done on a much larger scale when the likes of Bon Jovi perform at the Bowl.

There is a Travelodge near the bowl, which could be cheap if you get a special offer or share a room. Plenty of other hotels and a YHA about 3 miles from the Bowl.

The circuit has grass on the inside, all the way around I think, which I am thinking of using as bays for teams. The idea being that when relay teams swap over, they go into their bay and the next rider sets off. (I'm thinking of having only one transponder per team and having it used as a relay baton, but I'll look into other team relay events to see how they are done first) Then the rest of the team can eat, sleep and rest in their bay. It's a 1.1km circuit, so even if only half of it hs a grassy area on the inside, then that would give 10 meters (by 5 as a guess) per team (including solos) with 50 entries so enough room for a tent during the event.
It would certainly be very handy if teams could set up the Thursday evening before and camp in their bay (if they like). That's only if they'd let us. I think that the whole circuit is caged in and locked up, so they might not like having it unlocked overnight. There is lots of parkland around that you could most likely find a quiet spot for wild camping (but I never told you thatWink)
We have to be out before Saturday night though because the car booters come very early on Sunday morning to set up.
There is grassy area on the outside of the track too, but having bays on both sides would get dodgy with riders slowing down to go to their bay both sides while others want to speed on.
There would be some clearing up to do after the event. Probably some messing about and allowing riders to have a rest before announcing the results etc. So you'd almost certainly have time for a few hours sleep as soon as you finish riding. I'm thinking of starting and finishing at around midday to 2pm as a mass start.

Those are only my intentions so far. I need to check that they are possible and the best options and any comments, questions and suggestions are welcome.

From an event that started out as a solo event with the possibility of some teams it now seems to be a team event which may allow solo riders.  It would also appear that solo riders would get hit harder on the entry fee.

This is quite sad because a solo recumbent/velo is unable to find an event in the UK which will accommodate this type of bike and even then there are limited EU events.  Anyone wanting a qualification 24 hr ride for a solo RAAM therefore has to travel abroad or be hounded by teams should they want to use a recumbent in the RAAM or RAI.  That said it is early days and I think you would get more solo riders if the EU recumbents were made aware of it as there is a shortage of this type of event.

The Goodwood 24 hour would not take nothing but road racing bikes which is the one event in the UK which potential RAAM riders can use for qualification.  If you speak to Barbara who did RAAM on a recumbent the qualification is a problem for recumbent riders.

Why don't the UK RAAM riders get together and organise an event for qualification purposes?

Teethgrinder: Is the Milton Keynes event actually going to happen? With people booking holidays and making other commitments it needs to be confirmed either way pretty quickly.
If it is to run as a BHPC event (and use the club's insurance) it will need committee approval.

Hedgehog,
I have contacted the RAAM admin about Ride 24. This is one of the 2 UK RAAM Qualifiers, the other being the Mersey Roads RTTC 24-Hour National Championship. Apparently recumbents are not allowed in Ride 24. My argument to RAAM was that a race should not be a "RAAM Qualifier" unless all RAAM acceptable bikes could participate. Many/most? RAAM bikes (Titanflex and such) are not UCI legal so does that mean that they can't do these either? Lets face it the "RAAM Qualifier" is a selling point for the races and RAAM should force them to allow RAAM valid bikes!

If you can lend your voice to mine it certainly would help.

Regards
Neil

Is ride24 that event we got invited to at Cycle2008 and was then later told we should not have been invited?
