Russ,

Llanbedr airfield near Harlech is now a private field since the RAF moved out. You may be able to arrange a time when they aren't flying and they do have a long runway.

Hi Russ, AFAIK, Upper Heyford is mainly housing/industrial estates now, but nearby Enstone (which Top Gear used to use) may be a possibility. They are both close to me.

Thanks all - lots of emails pinged out to various airfields, track day companies, flying schools etc - many thanks for suggestions. 
Ian, any ideas for how to get in touch with RAF Fairford? (still active but no longer the space shuttle emergency runway...)

Some suggestions:
 
1) Write to:
Commanding Officer
RAF xxxx airfield
 
That should work on US bases too because I think they have an RAF liason person
 
2) Could we put this thread on a BHPC only section
It could be called BM training
Just to not give info to the enemy i.e. property developers
 
3) I can check out airfields in/near Cambridgeshire
This info can then all be edited into one common thread because it will be useful for future people
