Hi Anthony

Thanks for considering us.

We usually run mass(ish)-start races with about 20 riders. They are much more fun than TTs Smile and more interesting for spectators. Normally we would have two races, with a total of about 40 riders, but if this isn't a BHPC points event (Adrian?) then I think about 20-25 participants is a more realistic prediction. A typical race would be 40 minutes plus a lap. If the course is wide enough, we sometimes run 40+ riders together, but there are BIG speed differences between the fastest and slowest.

Our experence of the Jersey town-centre criterium is that the recumbent race is very popular with the spectators. Although hundreds of Bromptons with the riders in evening dress must be fun too! I know a lot of BHPC members have Bromptons, so maybe they could join in with that as well?! Also from our Jersey experience, I can say to potential competitors that racing is even more fun infront of a large crowd and spurs you to greater performance.

I think this is a great opportunity to promote recumbents (a primary purpose of the BHPC) and we should support it, even if it isn't a BHPC points event.

I'm happy to recce the course if possible. From what I remember, it's a typical Triathlon course, with a great backdrop!

Geoff / Adrian,

How does this sound?

1. Use 1km sprint course for a 'Sprint Duel' between 2 riders. Fastest rider wins 'Sprint Duel' & times are used as qualifying positions for mass start race.
2. Mass start race around 6.5km TT course - could be 2 or 3 laps?

Fastest TT riders completing in 26 mins - http://www.bikeblenheimpalace.com/assets/files/BlenheimRoadCC.pdf

I've found a quick video of the course, that should give you an idea of the back side of the palace roads - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yA8WvTKvDc

Not sure at the moment whether we could do 2 races around TT course. Will update.

Thanks for posting the video Antony.

Looks like a really nice place to race - Only comment I would make is that the lack of run-off (trees very close to the track) combined with the narrow track may give some safety concerns for some of our faster folk who would be doing 40+MPH in places.

Hi Folks
like the idea of the blenheim race it would be a good chance for the club to get some advertising and a chance to meet more of joe public , just saw the video and the track looks awfully narrow would that be too tight for some , apart from that health permitting I'm in.

The narrower road is at the back side of the palace - probably about 2km long. Here are some pics of the 2011 event - http://road.cc/content/image/40988-blenheim-2011-hutchinson-won-brompton-champs-and-40km-tt-double-can-he-repeat

You'll see that the course is a lot wider around the front of the palace & down over the lake.

Here is a map of the park - http://www.blenheimpalace.com/assets/files/general2011/blenheim-map-2010.pdf

Narrower road is off map. Course (from memory) is wide or open from bridge in top left corner, past maze + pleaseure gardens, around palace, over Grand Bridge & left past Rosamund's Well. Road gets narrower at next left fork (off map).

Sounds like an idea to get someone from HPBC to assess suitability - Geoff?

for our fast bikes 3 lots of 6.5km (about 12.2miles) would take the fast bikes about 20mins. most riders in our fast races less than 30mins (under normal racing thingies. I ask again can our bike run in the TT event? even as a second class.

here are some ideas for PR profiling

Duel of the styles DF Vs recumbent -----Ultimate speed

1)sprints standing start, marker points 50m 250m 500m 1km
2)200m flying starts

3)standard TT

looking at some of those drops the quests/beanos/quattros/etc are going to be very fast 40mph with the brakes on

our part fair class are will easily match the normal DF bikes, and lets face it if our esteemed Mr burrows raced, how in their right mind would not like to say they got beat by him (or beat him

can the 1km track and 6.5km track be used at the same time?

this to be fair is one event NOT to miss, I enjoy reading the ride reports in CW each year.
I will most interested in working to make this happen now and on the day just to bring both my Ffeuen and pedair.

Before I say yes i really would like somebody to recce the course, slopes i don't mind, corners would be interesting!  but a no-go for me would be an abrupt up and over or down e.g. a hump back bridge.  Any slope that rises or falls abrubtlywith a change of more than 1" in 2'6" will have me grounding.  Although alternative is taking my new velomobile, but i really wouldn't want to stuff it into a tree!
