YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU! We have been offered the opportunity to take part in a day of cycling activites on the sussex coast on the 28th August 2011 (Sunday). This will be part of a three day event of different activities featured around Worthing and organized by the local council. I have been approached by one of the councillors who is responsble for promoting cycling in Worthing and he wants to know if we can do something like a race or a procession. The main coast road will be closed to traffic between George V avenue roundabout and Heene road (distance just under 1 mile each way). The road is flat and smooth and wide. The problem is the roundabout at one end is very tight (probably tighter than Shewsbury) and not suitable for streamliners or even ratracers to get round. The most probable event of a racing nature would have to be drag races like we did at the Worlds at Hove.
I have spoken to Adrian and he (quite rightly) has pointed out that many of you might not be prepared to travel to such an event even if it was a points event because of the limited nature of the racing.
The organiser would be equally happy with some kind of demonstration runs and we could set up a club stand like we have at York.
The questions therefore are:
Who is willing to commit to the event on the basis of it being a racing event, and who is prepared to come and help in the event that we run it as a publicity event with no racing points attached.

I turn up for points, but probably not just for a drag strip, sorry.

Is there also a birdman type of competition that weekend, I seem to remember Bognor relocating theirs to Worthing recently.
If so then doing a bit of human powered flying in addition to the cycling might liven things ( and interest ) up a bit.
Just imagine a correx flying machine complete with BHPC logo!

A couple of years ago I took part in the Worthing Birdman event and as far as I can recall, the road parallel to the beach is indeed closed off during the two days, but the parking bays along it are still used for event viewers and the whole length becomes a pedestrian zone. It is not fenced off along it's length and with many hundreds of spectators around and wanting to cross to and from the beach, there is a very real risk of Beanos/y's , Ratty things , and other high speed devices coming into contact with people, this would not enhance the club image nor it's insurance premium! So IMHO racing might be too risky in such an open environment, and as regards any display, the spectators have come to watch damn fools jumping into the oggin rather than those with quirky bikes. If the weather is too rough for the Birdman event ( i.e. > 30kts) to provide the spectacle for the visitors, then pedalling wouldn't be easy anyway, though it might be entertaining.

The Worthing birdman event is one or two weeks before the bank holiday. I have been assured that the roads will be closed off for the event, as to whether there will be barriers I will check; either way marshalls would be arranged to keep pedestrians clear as they were at the worlds in Hove promenade. As for side winds there a considerable reduction in the effect of winds comming off the sea by the time you are at the road due to it being lower and sheltered somewhat.

Briefly mentioned ( by John Rogers) at the recent West Sussex CC cycle forum. IIRC there are issues surrounding the road closure if 'racing' is involved. Happy to help out with some form of demonstration, though.

I spoke to the organiser the other day and explained that it was very unlikely that we could put on a race for him but he would be more than happy for us to have a stand and do some demo rides and talk to the public. Thanks for the offer Mike I'll contact you soon.
