Hopefully we'll all be seeing pop-up cycle lanes appearing over the next few weeks - let's all use them as much as possible to try to make sure that they stay permanently:

"We recognise this moment for what it is: a once in a generation opportunity to deliver a lasting transformative change in how we make short journeys in our towns and cities.....The government therefore expects local authorities to make significant changes to their road layouts to give more space to cyclists and pedestrians."

Bullet points:
  • Installing ‘pop-up’ cycle facilities ie cycle lanes

  • Using cones and barriers to widen footways

  • Encouraging walking and cycling to school

  • Reducing speed limits to 20mph

  • Introducing pedestrian and cycle zones: restricting access for motor vehicles at certain times (or at all times) to specific streets

  • Modal filters; closing roads to motor traffic, for example by using planters or large barriers.

  • Providing additional cycle parking facilities at key locations

  • Changes to junction design to accommodate more cyclists

  • ‘Whole-route’ approaches to create corridors for buses, cycles and access only on key routes into town and city centres.

  • Identifying and bringing forward permanent schemes already planned

Please could someone post this on Facebook too Smile

They're saying all the right things, but go on to show that local authorities are still legally hamstrung by the same consultation / TRO requirements that have neatly prevented any fast or radical change.

I anticipate some cones and magic paint.  Hopefully I'll be proved wrong.

<sceptic>
This is Grant Shapps, Sebastian Fox and Michael Green's announcement from yesterday, yes?  Given his track record, I expect to see very little happening.  Probably almost immediately.
