Other option is to get decent calipers. The TRP Spyke mechanical disc calipers are good and easy to fit. For hydraulics, you can't beat Hope. Would be simpler and cheaper than fitting drums maybe?

Hi Paul
When I suggested he contacted ICE and asked for advice he said it was a Carbon trike.     http://www.carbontrikes.com/eng/index.html

"It is a Carbontrike. I will be taking the wheels off tomorrow to see what is possible. It is a magnificent trike with a very compliant ride and 100% bombproof mudguards which shrug off the worst weather.
The only downfall are the b....y disk brakes.
Is there anyone out there who could send me some photos of the ICE backing plate so I can see how it is mounted to the cross beam.
Thanks
Mark"

I'm guessing he is planning to replicate ICE's solution in carbon fibre. The stresses will be very high on the backing plate so it needs someone who knows how the stresses in carbon fibre relate to what he wants to do. Otherwise he risks a very expensive failure of his cross beam. Personally I'd live with the disk brakes because that is what the trike is designed for.

All the best.
Roy

All I can tell Mark is that ICE mount their disk brakes on a very substantial plate about 15 mm thick. They mount their drum brake retaining plate on a very substantial irregular shaped casting. Mine is on a suspension model though so a non suspension model may be different.
All the best.

Looking at the photos of the Carbon Trikes I notice that they use a similar plate to ICE for mounting their disk brake. If you could mount the drum backing plate to that it would work without any extra stress on the carbon fibre I would have thought. Just my opinion though and I take no responsibility if the trike  breaks. My After 7 drum brake is mounted on an aluminium plate and it has suspension and no rear covering, for better cooling.
All the best.

My thoughts it is already a ' strong point ' on the trike.

However of more concern is what is the current axle diameter ?

SA hubs like a M12 bolt or their own M12 Q/R skewer.

Hi Paul, they make their own lightweight hubs http://www.carbontrikes.com/eng/news.html so I think the only way to find out is to ask Mike or contact them or go to their stand at SPEZI. They won't be using standard axles for sure. The weight would be too much. Might be a standard diameter though to fit the ceramic bearings they are using.

All the best
