I have just been to a meeting on the future of Eastway during the Olympics development. The news is that they have found a replacement site and want to see it active by July next year. The site is at Rommey Marsh in Enfield, a smaller site but it is owned by Lee Valley Park which makes the time scale feasable, and they can squeeze a 1.6 km track onto it and possibly a couple of hills. It is right next to the M25 which will no doubt please out of towners. The meeting was carefully managed and they seemed to be very keen to satisfy everybodies demands, since this is a condition of their planning permission for the olympic site. Some people were concerned about only getting half a season at Eastway and the danger of there being a gap in provision. Since the developers claim not to know when Eastway will close, the rush to open Enfield is either based on a worse case scenario or they are not telling everything they know. Sounds like we may only get one race there in 2006.

The plan for the Velopark on the current site is still in place but not until after 2012.

Those road-namers have been at it again.

If I've remembered the map on the wall at Eastway correctly, this new site is the one occupied by "Depot" on this map.  Not content with roads named after Laughton and Chatterton [sic] near the Lincoln, track, just look at what they've been and called the access road itself!

That depot site , is a huge Sainsburys distribution warehouse. The other side of the river is empty.

When the w/house was built it took a while for the bomb squad to clear the area of WW2 bombs.

Ah, looks like my recollection wasn't quite right.  Indeed, now you point it out, the site just west and across the river from the one I identified looks more like it.  I suspect I was confused by multimap's aerial photo showing the site as ready to be developed.

That photo must be 5? years old if not more, It will be good to watch the new site being built, as I have to drive past there every night on my way to Essex and Suffolk.
