I've uploaded my own tribute to Mike in the form of an audio recording I made with him at the 1st Open Dutch European Championships, Emmen, Netherlands 1990. I was a curious outsider and travelled to Emmen with a similarly minded friend to check out HPVs.
From memory I remember asking another Brit rider whether I could interview them about HPVs and they laughed and said go and ask Mike as he'll talk to you. He certainly did and he graciously talked to me for some time as we stood trackside watching a race. At that time I made the occasional 'odd' sport report for local radio - not football, cricket or rugby etc, but I never got around to editing this recording. Partly because I was unsure how to edit into a piece when I had so much of Mike talking and so little of anyone else. I've made an edit now and uploaded as a video file onto Vimeo for simplicity. Mike was such an easy talker with a great turn of phrase. Lot's of history in this piece recorded around the time of the 10th anniversary of BHPC and 5th year for the Dutch organisation, about setting up a European collaboration for national organisations, why the Americans wanted to do things their own way and even bird watching. Andy Pegg also makes an appearance and another current member gets name checked after a false start incident. |

Bit late I know, but really enjoyed listening to your recording, Nigel. Thanks very much for sharing and wasn't it a fascinating record of the HPV world 32 years ago?
