Luckily enough, I had just enough to do the one this May which was the last at that circuit.

Ultremo 406 tyres arrived this morning. Started dribbling when I took one out of the box. Fitted one to the front wheel of a moulton spaceframe and just used a 28mm 406 tube which just about worked and the tyre pumped up nice and straight. The tyre sits 20mm outside the diameter of the rim and looks very cute with the writing going half way round the tread.
They should be a good one to use for a kingcycle front tyre as I expect the outside diameter must be very close to the original kingcycle tyres, might even get a mudguard in as well. I also tried the wheel in moulton F frame front forks and they will go with a bit of tinkering by either filing a bit off the underside of the fork crown or filling in a bit of the drop outs so that the wheel sits 1-2mm lower in them and you'd need to find a front brake with a 20-30mm drop and definately no room for mudguards.
Potentially the quickest ever 406 tyre

Andy -
Did you reach any conclusion about the best inner tube to fit a 23-406 Ultremo ZX? Westcountry Recumbents have them in stock again so it would be an added bonus if there was a tube which actually fits them. |

To answer my own question: according to Don Smith on the recumbents.com forum, the best fitting tube for the 406 Ultremos is a 18" x 1" tube from XLR (part no 144369). This is 19-400 in sensible (ETRTO) units, which seems a pretty good match for a 23-406 tyre. Unfortunately it seems to be completely unobtainable outside the US, so if anyone happens to be passing Niagara Cycles please could they pop in and get me a couple?

So they do exist and arrived today:
![]() These appear variously as Primo, Kenda, XLR and CST (Cheng Shin Tires), which are very probably all the same company. As they are vanishingly hard to get hold of, and no longer listed on the CST website, I strongly suspect they aren't made any more. Now to see how well they fit the 23-406 Ultremo. |
