The point that I am trying to make is that regardless of how good you are changing class midway through a season GUARANTEES that you cannot win anything. So if Lance Armstrong decided to start the season on a Baron as unfaired, thrashed all the except the fully faired, fitted a tailbox, thrashed everyone he would win .... nothing!

So the moral here is STICK TO ONE CLASS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

How does this stack with the club's desire to foster innovation?
Innovate only in the off season?
Innovate, but plan ahead so that you do the races in the "right" class even if you start the season in the "wrong" class?

Is this really what the club wants or am I the only one that thinks that this arrangement is daft?

As a thought regarding how many competitors the scoring system has to cope with:

Having taken a peek at the records for this year, while there are loads of racers (85 by the 'open' table), the largest field in any class (except open) thus far this year appears to be 22 (round 1, unfaired - and I think this is the only class field of more than 20 this year).

If you accept that the open class will be won, overall and probably on any given day, by someone in the fully faired class, then for most racers open class points probably hold much less interest than specific class points, or merely the fun of turning up and having a bit of a dice with whoever's closest, regardless of machinery.

Therefore, the points system does not have to deal with 40, 50, 60+ potential entrants. Having a system that differentiated between the top 15 or maybe 20 riders would probably be ample to satisfy the 'I have more points than you' cravings of the people chasing the glory, champagne, endorsement deals, trophies and trophy girl/boyfriends that championships undoubtedly bring (Shocked), whilst those who turn up to have fun but don't care about points... ...probably wont really care if they're "off the bottom" and thus got as many and as few points as the person who finished just in front or behind them, also out of the differentiated positions.

This might make the math rather easier to deal with when devising a scheme that suitably differentiates riders.

Just a thought.

The system I devised last year (which, remember, tries to satisfy the objectives which were broadly accepted by several of the contributors to that thread - it may not ideally match this year's model) would award points as follows:

to 60 racers: 1842, 1207, 973, 873, 797, 734, 681, 635, 594, 558...    32, 25, 17, 10, 3

to 20 racers: 1412, 865, 657, 558, 481, 418, 365, 319, 278, 242...    80, 59, 40, 21, 3

to 10 racers: 1086, 605, 418, 319, 242, 179, 126, 80, 40, 3

to 5 racers: 762, 348, 180, 81, 4

to 3 racers: 521, 155, 3

This assumes, of course, that the current system of awarding points separately to classes is retained, because nobody had suggested otherwise when I was working this out.

Points are derived from an Excel-generated logarithmic curve with positions 1 and 2 artificially boosted, which may be considered inappropriate in tiny fields. This can be fixed, but I'd have to think about a way of doing it which doesn't render the whole scheme hopelessly complicated.

The assumed biggest field, 70 riders, would award 2000 points to the Open class winner.

I still think the introduction of a Handicap award would be a more positive move than any jiggering around with other classes or with the points system.
