Topic: Newport Velodrome, attendance Posted: 15 May 2009 at 12:52pm |

As a fan of my local indoor venue, is it an idea to ask for refundable deposits from racers up front, before committing to booking the place? At least that way we're not leaving BHPC wide open to a big loss...

I'm interested. Is it expensive because it costs a lot per hour - or because it has to be booked for longer than is needed?

It costs quite a lot per hour and, if I recall correctly, we have to have a qualified coach, too, which - unless anyone can find one willing to do it for nothing - adds further to the cost.
Though the advantages of being indoors for a winter/early-season event are obvious, steeply-banked wooden tracks are designed for brakeless, fixed-wheel bikes and (my personal opinion, not BHPC policy) are not a good home for other machines of any variety, still less multitracks. Perhaps I'd make an exception for a one-up time-trial such as an hour record attempt.
Note that I've absolutely nothing against these velodromes for their designed purpose. I've had great fun on the couple of occasions I've ridden a track bike at Manchester, and would jump at any chance to do it again.

Is that like the bloke at Manchester shouting at the guy at the top of the bank to come down because he obviously didn't know what he was doing? Said bloke being Mr Burrows... <fx: the rest of us duck and cover...> Rob

If I'm recalling the same incident, Mr Burrows did happen to be freewheeling around the top of the banking, which is almost certainly Not A Good Idea.

I'm afraid I'd disagree with that Adrian - the indoor velodromes I've ridden have been absolutely stonking for multitracks! Both Meadowbank (Edinburgh) and Manchester were memorable races on three wheels though I'd probably prefer to be riding them in multitrack-only races as trike and bike behaviour on the banks seems somewhat different... But then I guess they are usually intended for only a small number of riders at any one time - bar that mad race where they hold hands and nobody knows what is happening. Rob

Still a cue for a duck-and-cover event....

Arbut, you're fast enough to go around the corners without rolling over down the banking...

18mph seemed to be the critical speed for Meadowbank (is that one gone now?) and Manchester... Below that speed it seemed not to be a case of rolling, more a matter of gravity noticing and a sudden, sometimes unexpected downwards sideways slide... But maybe that is just my low racing trikes... Rob
