Not having taken a multitrack on a velo, I cannot comment on that, but I did notice that once I had taken a big gulp and just got on with it, 16-18mph at Newport was very stable and easy - lower velocities were not. I had a great time, and would really like to do it again. There's something really quite special about barreling into a corner as fast as you can, feeling the G load up, slingshotting round (and above Shocked) fellow racers, an absolute hoot. Compared to what other adrenaline sports cost, I think we could manage. I would be happy (well, not happy, but you know what I mean) to pay £20 or £30 for an hour or two's playtime. My petrol bill to get to any event bar Preston is about £40 to £50 anyway .... Unhappy

Howard,

I would certainly be keen on the idea of going to Newport again. It's really quite an experience, and not really so dangerous. Can anyone shed some light on their general pricing/availability? Did we used to pay something like #400 for 4 hours?

Even if it isn't on the race calendar, if a number of us band together, does hiring for say 2 hours 'fun' riding become feasible? Say, 10 people at #20 each??  I'm (not necessarily) saying I would organise it, but can we get a gauge of how many might be interested to attend such an event?

- Paul

Aha, a bit of double posting....looks like Rob has beaten me to it...

Well I'm off the Manchester on the 5th with some guys from work Smile
if we aint gonna do it in BHPC, I'm going back to UCI regs for that kickApprove

also racing in BHPC, in terms of cost, should be a year overview not just track by track IMHO. else we are gonna loose all the races west of the M5 and north M4 (ish)

I'm sure we all can go just down the road most weeks and get a 2-3 quid 10TT on a DF, but BHPC is about the ride, the bike(bent) the build etc so for my money some indoor is a must!
and should be a main fixture every year loss leader or not.

Would combining it with Castle Combe for a weekend of racing help increase the attendance so reduce entry fees?

Rob - your description reminds me of the velodrome at cyclevision a couple of years ago. After getting over the initial WTF at the steepness of the banking (how on earth am I going to go around that without crampons?) it was a lot of fun.

Keith

One of the problems with velodromes and recumbents is the number of participants and the speed differentials. When I was at Newport (results tables here), we ended up with a race of 10 and one of 8 - the maximum I think you could get away with, and even then it got a bit crowded. While I think combining Newport with Castle Combe could work, I would worry about how we would fit 45 racers on the track rather than 18 ! Judging on past numbers, as Adrian says, that's not likely, but it would mean that we would need the track for an awful lot longer (5 races ??), hence putting the hire cost up.

Perhaps another idea would be to look at it from the 'weekend' idea but go the other way:  how about a touring day following a (non championship ?) 'race' day ? Makes the journey worthwhile, and could attract more interest than previously. One extreme to the other

Perhaps some of us could get together to rent it over the winter. I tried to book Manchester Velodrome a couple of months ago for some testing but it was fully booked.

Yes, there was some very exciting racing on the track at CV2008 - but all those taking part were fast, confident and (I reckon) experienced.

We don't have enough people in that category to make Newport a viable race venue - not for a counting event, anyway.

Sloten was a brilliant Velodrome to ride. Very similar to Calshot near Southampton.  http://www.fatbirdscc.co.uk/album_file.php?user=Hadden&album_id=2&media_id=13

I'd definitely go to Newport again if we get the opportunity... It's something very different to our normal races (totally different to the outdoor velodromes I've ridden on) and an amazing experience...
