I gather Mike B. is still under the illusion there is any will to organise an international event next year. He has been on to Bentwaters, fortunately no luck, and looking at Fowlmead. No sprint course. He thinks there is some agreemant to do this. I have told him about this discussion. He said Alan G and Richard B seemed to be in accord with it. He suggested it in 2008. Lee heard and made the wrong assumption it was a done deal.

Mike has certain similarities to an oil tanker (he would hate the comaprison). Once started in one direction, he takes a lot of prods to change course.  From experience at Brighton, Mike isn't great at doing organisation. Unless you want to do it yourself, be clear and dissuade him.

It isn't our turn. We only do these things when we owe the hospitality. Denmark does not seem to be active at present. Germany had a big event out of the cycle, so France looks like the most likely victim. There will probably be a Cyclevison even if nothing else runs. I have not heard about this year yet but the new course sounds great.

I was chatting with some of the Netherlands crew at Monza. It seems they are worried. The core of organisers has dropped to 30. If we ever have another event I suggest we ask them to run Cyclevision over here.

I spoke to Mike about it at Reading and he is certainly very keen on the idea...
I suggested Fowlmead may be a good option if Bentwaters isn't available...
I think it would be great and I would support it (and do all I can to help) if we could find enough people willing to help organise - At the moment we don't have an organiser for the racing that is supposed to be taking place at Hog Hill next week... Cry

What time of year is the Worlds usually?

2012 is an open slot for the Worlds, none of the other clubs/countries can do it. I'm happy to see what Mike can pull together and propose. I, too, cannot take a main organising role, but would be glad to help.

Look - we have done the event more recently than the French. Just because nobody has come up with an event does not mean we must, Cyclevision happens every year, so there is an international event to go to.
We don't have an organiser. Mike isn't it, no matter how keen. I won't do it or gNick. If someone wants to take it on, fine. I don't see any prospects. Don't let us get steamrollered into an event with nobody at the head.
Does anyone except Mike think there is an advantage in running an event in the olympic year?
It isn't a matter of thinking 'that would be nice'. It is a matter of a huge comittment. For Brighton, I tried to do it as a consesnsus of the comittee, which was relatively united then. Eventually I had to make most of the organising decisions myself. Before we can run a big event, we need someone who can do that.

This discussion is an example of why we can't do a major event. Nobody can do anything decisive.

It is not a Royal Wedding... It's a cycle race for probably 100 people.

If we as a club can't organise that with a year to plan it then what use are we??

If we decide as a club to go ahead I'll be happy to help Mike organise the event.

Anybody else??

And why not Mike?
Personally I would like something to think about other than those bl**dy olympics.

By the way I don't say I won't, I can't, which is a different thing.

I don't really want to ask, but how difficult is this?

How many days?
What sort of circuit?
What format of races?
How many people expected?
What is the method for telling everyone about it?

It's really tricky... It would be sort of like the pedal car club hosting the European Championships but that would be impossible wouldn't it??
Oh no, they did it last year... Big smile

Two days of racing... Mixture of events with a long race (3 hours or more), probably a time trial and if there is somewhere long and flat enough then some flat out (hopefully) high speed sprints...

Probably about 100 competitors...
Need to provide camping or preferably point people towards a suitable camp site...
Would be promoted on web site and in Velovision...

If I have anything to do with organising then pedal cars will be more than welcome...
