I've got a bunch of noob questions about recumbents and utility HPVs. I couldn't see an obvious place to ask these.

Maybe I can put them anywhere?

Eg,
  • Any thoughts on Velodreamer Columbo as a first recumbent?
  • Anyone got any experience with utliity quadcycles?
  • Any thoughts on how to get rid of the car for short journeys? I'd want a fully faired recumbent tandem, with side by side seating. The OH wants to stay warm and dry when being collected from the station, etc - and I can imagine once I get in one, I'd be happier that way, too. But she also doesn't want to be low to the floor, so I assume I'll need something custom built.
Thanks.

Edward (Facebook boycotter - I gather that's where more of the action is at...)

“Any other business” is probably as good as anywhere.
Yep! Most of us still use Facebook. Our little group is moderated so it’s pretty safe regardless of what Mr Zuckerberg does.
I’ve never seen a Velodreamer in the flesh. Looks ok but the link is from 2019 so I doubt it ever took off.

I always think something like a Kingcycle is a good way to start, rather than a machine with tiller steering.
It sounds like you need a Velomobile really. The Quattrovelo was the only mass produced 4 wheeler I’m aware of and I think it’s just gone out of production.
There are no commercially available 2 seaters that I’m aware of so it would have to be a DIY job.
You’ll usually find a few velomobiles you can have a look at if you come along to any BHPC event.

It's a long shot, but you might be able to find one of the five Duo Quests that were built:

You'd need to speak with Denez about a DuoQuest, on Fb! https://www.facebook.com/denez.bodennec

Personally I think the DuoQuest would be a nightmare on the road (around here anyway).
Too wide for cars to safely pass in a lot of places but that won’t stop them trying.

The worry the other half has is that velomobiles are so low to the ground, we'd get squished. I can see the point, given it's urban riding in a town that's unused to (even) cyclists.

The high position was one reason I liked the look of the Columbo, and was wondering if there's anything equivalent as a two-seater.

Even wondered if two independent recumbents could be joined (separably) by some bars, like rafting two canoes to make a catamaran.

There are recumbent tandems available (two and three wheels) with one rider behind the other.

Also possible to couple delta trikes in tandem.  Works particularly well when you've got a smaller/less strong rider doing the steering.

Being low is something people without recumbent experience worry about for the wrong reasons.  It doesn't make you invisible (indeed, riding something weird more than makes up for it in terms of drivers paying attention), but it does put you in the full glare of dipped-beam headlights and means you get sprayed with mud/water by passing vehicles.

Here is a video of two Kettweisel delta trikes joined as a tandem.

And ere is a video of the Kettweisel ‘batwing’ fairing and poncho for bad weather. Won’t be cheap, but probably far better and more versatile than a purpose built jobbie, that no one else will want when you want to sell.
