All,

The 2007 European Pedal Car Championships will be held over the weekend of September 1st and 2nd at the rather brilliant http://www.pedalcars.info/events/info.asp?VenueID=south_berkshire - Blackbushe circuit .

This weekend is also rounds 6 and 7 of the 2007 BPCC, with 6 hours of racing on both days, so if anyone fancies standing around waiting to race* for large parts of two days, now's the time to organise some friends (a team is four drivers plus whatever support people you wish) and arrange to borrow a car (unless you're going to build one in the next 7 weeks).

If you need a car and don't know where to start with organising the borrow of one, let me know as soon as possible.

Those BHPC regulars who raced at Curborough a couple of years ago did, I seem to remember, have fun; from a driver's perspective Blackbushe is more technically demanding and thus more rewarding and even more fun. Especially if it's damp...

Any 'BHPC affiliated' team can race without paying the annual BFPCR registration fee (£25). Race entry and driver licence fees are unchanged. 'BHPC affiliated' means a team made up mainly of BHPC members; it doesn't mean non-members who happen to have read this post on this forum!

NB. Due to the circuit size, the field is limited to 35 cars. Some of these places are reserved for invitees from mainland Europe and other pedal car events, the remaining 30-ish are first-come-first-served. I don't envisage this causing the rejection of any would-be entrants, but you never know...

Race entries and driver licences can be bought in our http://www.pedalcars.info/shop/Scripts/default.asp - online shop . Although arranging a car first might be a good idea...

*A.k.a. Eating, hydrating, resting, taking lap times, keeping an eye on the opposition, adapting strategies to suit and generally supporting your team mates in a teamly sort of manner.

I might be up for that if we can get a team together...

Cool. The sooner you do (if you do), the better the chance of borrowing a decent car!

Any other takers then???

Anybody up for flying the BHPC flag (perhaps we could manage to do the whole event without getting disqualified this time... )

Just remember, a team is four drivers*!

*Although the weekend is two seperate BPCC events, so you don't have to use the same four drivers both days. Just you can only use four on any given day and they have to be named on the teamsheet, in advance of the race.

Looks like we may now have two as I've had a PM from another possible...

By my calculations that's 50% of a team...

I think at Curborough we had a few members who'd travelled up to have a look and when they saw how much fun it looked they couldn't resist the temptation to have a play...

We'll try to behave this time...

If you get more people interested than will fit, you may well find one or two other teams have a spare seat.

It looks as though we have a very generous offer of the loan of a car....

Anybody else interested in having a go at this (it really was great fun last time...)

On the other hand, I also have a couple of experienced drivers willing to fill in if you don't raise a 4!

The car ran to 3rd and 4th places respectively on the 2 days we had at Shenington the other weekend by the way so it's fairly compeitive.

The car is one of these by the way:

The other one is currently leading the championship and won the European 24 hour race in France last year.

(We have better tyres now though!)

I shared a car with Dave Larrington at Curborough and that was fine (I saw not being able to see where I was going as a distinct advantage... Saved me having to close my eyes!!)

Jes has said that he is going to fit SPD pedals to the car which is fine with me - Is that ok with everybody else?

We need to give Jes names and dates of birth ASAP - In spite of my cryptic forum user name, my real name is Alan Goodman and I was born 13th October 1962.

We need to pay £30 per team (£15 per day).
I'm happy to just send a cheque for now if that's ok with everybody else?

Jes: Do you have any details of the camp site??

The car is a loan - no charge.

I might ask for a small donation towards tyres or something.

Let's see how the car looks at the end of the race.

I remember that 24 hour which Graydog drove provided an unusually large amount of mechanical mayhem. Changing the drive shaft at 4am for example...

That's a blast from the past!

The 2nd one wasn't even a race - just a testing session.

Did we really use to race those without bucket seats?
How did we cope with 16" wheels and fat tyres?

In those days men were real men, boys were real boys and small green furry creatures from Alpha Centurii were real small green furry creatures from Alpha centurii!

And it will be number 41.
But basically it is together and I'm shaking it down tonight to see if it goes.

Graydog/Paul:

Just had this from Jes regarding shoes/pedals for the event - I'm happy to use Look or SPD so has anybody else got a preference??:

Alan,

2 choices for the weekend!

Contrary to what I said, I have looks fitted to the car at present.

If you want to run looks then that is fine and my driver already has them.

If you want to ru n"spd's" then that will also work but it would help if you could bring a set of pedals(! sorry!).
Also, Jimmy will need to borrow / share a pair of size 9 shoes I'm afraid.

Let me know what you want to do and we can sort it out.

Thanks,

Jes

P.S: Be prepared for this to change on the day - such things happen...

just checked SDP only......

can't find the an adaptor plate either
I'm a size 6 making it hard to find good shoes.

Jes has now said that he may be able to bring some SPD shoes along for Jimmy if necessary.

-------------

Posted By: PaulC

I would be slightly leaning towards SPD. My shoes are a well worn 10. I don't mind sharing these, (though probably best to time arrange the pit change order to minimise shoe faffing).

I can bring some SPD pedals I have if necessary.

My shoes could take looks if need be, but I don't have any cleats at present...

Thanks, Paul

Cool.
I will bring the car down without pedals and you can fit your own.

Whichever driver we lend you (Jimmy or Steven) and Bob who will join you on Sunday when someone was having to leave as I remember will have spd's.

Good question!!

I'm English, I think Graydog is Welsh???

Can we just be British??

-------------

Posted By: jes@gcre
Date Posted: 28 August 2007 at 9:28pm

British it is.

Oddly, when we raced in France last year we were "Apollo Racing - Team GB" but this year I have sorted the entries into England, Wales, France and Italy. Possibly because there is a large Welsh contingent in the BPCC but mostly because it sounds better and I like the 6 nations rugby championship...

Top Italian team just joined the entry list btw!

Oh well, you can't have everything.

Blackbushe with a damp track is just out of this world but, to be fair, we've had a good fill of wet racing this year.

A bit of drizzle would be nice though - tends to swing things the way of the Apollo's because their handling is better balanced than some of the short wheelbased cars (which are lighter and some of which have faster drivers...)

We're currently in 10th place which we're pretty happy with considering the little mishap...

Paul C was absolutely flying (as usual) but unfortunately got a bit over-enthusiastic at the chicane and turned the car over!!

Paul: Have a good holiday, hope you are feeling ok...

Just another 6 hours to go tomorrow then...

Many thanks to Jes for arranging everything, and sorry about the crash...

A great first day of pedalcar-ing, (yes despite the incident). Good luck to the rest of the team:)

Got in front of the mirror at home. Many more random scrapes and bruises all over. Looks like I've been in a fight with a disk sander/angle grinder !

Oh well, only scrapes, otherwise absolutely fine:) Just so glad I didn't spoil my holiday by injuring myself. Someone did indeed dislocate on that chicane!

Many thanks to Jes for the loan of the car, and to everybody else for making us welcome.

Thanks to Jimmy for standing in both days and to Bob and Pete for today.

Top fun!

If only the French and Italians had learned a couple of English words before the start... "Left" and "Right" for example...

I think BHPC finished 9th (my own team finished 8th I believe) but official results will be out in a few days.

Glad to see you had a good time.

It's a totally different kind of racing to the BHPC events.

Like I said, until you do a pedal car race at somewhere like Blackbushe it is difficult to explain why pedal cars are built like they are. Like, they have to hit that chicane at 40kph 700 times in 2 days!

That's why they are a bit hench compared to the fantastic lightweight machines that win BHPC events.

Now, here's a challenge for you:

2008 Welsh 24 hour.
Margam Park, Port Talbot.
June 28th - 29th.
Thumbs Up

You'll have to find a way of transporting it to and from the track this time, but I'm sure we can sort something out...

I think you guys would like the Hillingdon/Hayes circuit we race on... It's relatively cheap, has a great surface and some interesting corners...

Definitely one of our better tracks.

2 questions:

Is there space (width) for pits?
Is it secure (like, you don't get people wandering across.

As you can appreciate with the number of juniors who race pedal cars, we have to be especially careful.

Security could be an issue actually... Would probably need marshalling in a couple of places...
I think there would be room for pits - There are some good photos cortesey of our Promotions Officer here...

I came home from Blackbushe with a single GILL track mitt.

No-one on the pedal cars forum has laid claim to it yet and given the proximity of our pits, I'm wondering if it's one of yours?
