As I'll be in France rather tha Reading on the 18th, I would appreciate any feedback on whether visitors (Players or Spectators) turn up as a result of press articles placed this week and flyers in Colleges.....
Thanks,

where will the signing in take place, in the carpark? or will it be track side? never been there before.
Are people allowed to just go in and watch like before 12.00?
Take care,

Since we won't be able to get track-side until some time between 11.30 and 12.00 and we would like to be ready to race from 12.00, I'd suggest we get signing on completed before we get on the track. Not sure if the car park or somewhere inside the sports centre will be best.
I wouldn't anticipate any problems with people spectating at the preceding stick-bike racing, either in the stands or outside the barriers around the outside of the track.

Some or all of the stick-bike racers wil be juniors so if watching and tempted to take pictures, it would be best to ask permission first

Reading 18th June 2011:
Everything you need to know (except any bits I've forgotten):
Location: Palmer Park Sports Stadium Wokingham Road READING RG6 1LF
Map http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=51.451974,-0.937271&spn=0.003296,0.007371&t=h&z=17 - here
Weather: After the track being throughly washed on Friday evening, the weather will be great - not too hot so those with full fairings will not over-heat, but with a bit of a wind to keep things interesting!
Race kit: This will magically appear . . . (we hope!)
Sign-on: The ferry gets in at 06:00, so we'll be there super early to setup the sign-on. The sign-on will be in the car with the sign-on sign parked to the left of the reception building. If you can sign-on as soon as you arrive, and bring something resembling the correct change (£7 for members, £10 for non members) this will help loads with the smoooooth running of things.
Assembly & Fettling: This must be completed by 12:00 at the latest, so that you are ready to . . .
Warm up on the track: The track will be available from 12:00 onwards, and you are encouraged to check your timing receiver box thingy is working and get some warmup laps in once the timing loop has been laid.
Racing: We're aiming to make the most of the velodrome with an action packed value 4 money schedule: 12:30-13:30 Fastest lap (out of 3) 20% Each rider will get 3 laps, points awarded will be based on the time of the fastest lap. The inner part of the track will be used for this, and the riders will be started individually. The outer part of the track can be used for warming up and cooling down. 13:30-14:30 Heat 1 race 45mins+2lap 60% Mass start, and 45mins of riding + the length of time it takes for the leading rider to get back to the line. The next time they cross the line they (and everyone) else gets the bell, and the next time after that its the checkered flag and the race is finished. 14:30-15:30 Heat 2 race 45mins+2lap 60% Same as above 15:30-16:30 Devil takes the hindmost 20% Mass start, and on every lap, the last rider to cross the line is taken out of the race. The only rule is that you can't overtake the last rider.
While you're not racing you may be asked to help out with marshaling, herding, waving things or checking things off a list - your help (no matter how small) will be much appreciated and, of course, incredibly rewarding!
Finish: We lose the track at 16:30, so its had back your timing receiver thingy and head home. We will extract the results and get them posted as soon as possible as we head up to Scotland for theee birthday of the year!
Looking forward to seeing you all there - don't forget your helmet, and a chain guard if you've not got a nose fairing.

I have been in brief contact with Keith within the last week and, yes, they will be organisating, but I haven't had details of their programme of races. They have been on the road, of course, attending the Worlds, which won't have helped their ability to post details.

They have now landed back in civilisation and posted a very comprehensive program of racing!!
Fingers crossed for the weather (especially the wind) behaving itself...
Just one comment on the race format... Those warming up/slowing down on the outside of the track will need to be very careful to avoid the peole on "hot" laps when they cross back to the middle, especially as most of us only have mirrors on the right...

Thanks for the comprehensive race programme. I would not recommend a devil though, we have tried them several times in the past and they always end up a disaster and arguments. Last time I remember us doing one was at lancaster, I stacked it on the bend just before the finish and while I was getting back on the bike someone (slash?) passed me and we could not make our mind up what should happen thus we ended up scrapping points for that race.
If we go by the rules, everyone should have stopped dead on the track and queued up behind me while I picked up my bike, lowered the gear, got back in it etc, Of course I was just around a blind bend thus the leader would have to have braked very hard to stop in time after noticing me there and possibly caused a pileup. It's unworkable.

Unfortunately due to problems at work that turned up this afternoon, I will have to be going to work over the weekend so the timing system will not be making it to Reading. Unless someone knows some really good magic?
I'll try to make it down to Hog Hill though the best laid plans of mice & engineers and all that...

One of the few perks of stepping forward to organise is that you get to choose the race format...
I think Devils have always been ok when we've run them on velodromes??
I agree they don't work very well on tracks with bends, largely because of the rule regarding not overtaking the person in last place... There was a disasterous Devil at Curborough a couple of years ago with one of the juniors (Sarah??) doing a superb job of going as slowly as possible and everybody else having to bunch up to avoid lapping her... There was very nearly a pile-up going into a corner...
Great fun to watch but I was really glad i wasn't in it!!

Hmmm, I've been reading some good reports about the timing system - but that all amounts to nothing if it can't be at a race!!! Is Alan's suggestion a go-er, or can it be left with, or picked up by, someone who is coming down to Reading?
Any help will be much appreciated,
Keith.

is there any way that in future the timing system can be left elswhere? It is a burden on gNick having to drive down south everytime, and it would mean in future that it would be available for eas(ier) delivery as there are many riders from the midlands south so passing to somebody who is attending is not too onerous. Just had a thought, does gNick have to have the system for uplaoding/downoading/tweaking etc?

Andrew and I can bring a computer to do the sign on etc and a camera to record the races but with no timing system, it will, sadly, be difficult to achieve Keith's idea of fastest laps.
We have the track until 4.30 but we do have to be off it by then and cleared away or they charge us more money.

Yes, once it is working reliably, believe me I really want this to be the responsibility of the race organisers and NOT the sole responsibility of myself or any other single person. No I don't need the system to tweak the results but I do need it to be able to check any physical mods. Current plan is to hand it over to whoever is doing Scunthorpe after Preston and Lancaster weekend, so if someone would volunteer for that...
I am waiting on some new improved (mostly smaller) bits from Kit and I would like to incorporate those to try and make the whole lot a bit more manageable. The current reader is also falling apart, I must have used second rate glue last time so that needs putting back together as well. I would also like to get the reader software simplified and modified to make that process easier.
As it stands it is nearly there, just needs tidying up - as an analogy think an old, rather worn, non-indexed derailleur system against a new indexed setup, it works but you do need to know where to nudge it!
I have also got to update the instructions so people other than myself or Kevin will be able to learn how to operate it.
I will try and get together a set of real results so you all can have a go at setting up races and processing the data, so everyone will know how it is done.

A big thank you to Keith and Sherri for organising. Was a very tight schedule to fit 3 events in the limited time we had on the track, and then a 20min delay as the heavens opened, so well done!
Was great to see Miles's new Quattro for the first time. Slower race looked like fun towards the end of the race a peleton of about ten riders built up. Got stuck on the end of the faster race with Stuart to make up the numbers. Never been lapped so many times by so many riders. Good to see such a strong field of fast riders. Every time Mike B went passed he seemed to be followed by a yellow Ford Anglia?.
The devil went into confusion towards the end when Andrew S didn't realise he was last man and carried on racing for a few laps, but it all worked out in the end.

There was a lot of interest at the start from the youths that had been racing at the track in the morning and a few of them hung around for a while to view the array of machinery. The viewing stand was pretty full also but was mostly friends and family sheltering from the rain. But I'm sure your efforts will pay dividends in the end.

Yes once again many thanks to Sherri and Keith for being selfless and organising for us all whilst not getting the chance to play out themselves.

Hope to see you all at Hog Hill and apologies for dashing off so quickly but family commitments elsewhere meant I was pushing it on time.

Firstly, thanks to everyone who came along, especially those who helped out. Despite a drenching towards the end of the second race of the second round (at least the spectators stayed dry in the stadium!) all went reasonably to plan.
In the absense of the new timing system, the old system was user - thanks to all the lap counters & Sherri! Some of the races were shortened to make this easier, and the results entered manually into the race spreadsheet/software.
After much perseverance with the race sortware (including restraining myself from going to the discus part of the athlettics track to attempt a record on throwing a laptop!) and help from Kevin, Andrew and Sherri, the proposed results are now ready. I’m getting a bit of ear-ache from Sherri about the length of time this is taking, so I’ve not been able to confirm rider numbers and classes – let me know if there is anything a-miss.

Many thanks Keith! Only thing that leaps out is that Sarah was fully faired and so not Sports, Street, or Part Faired, and Derek rode her bike for the 30 minute race, also fully faired... I think he was on the Hurricane for the other two rounds, just to add to the confusion...

The ruling on this is that, if you ride machines of more than one class within the same race meeting, your class for the whole meeting is deemed to be that of the "fastest" machine (in other words, the one in the highest in the hierarchy of classes). Therefore, if Derek rode an Open-class machine in the 30-min race, his class for the entire meeting is Open.
This isn't to penalise anyone who uses more than one machine, but simply to keep the job of allocating points feasible!
