This time, we do already have volunteers to organisate, but, unless they have help, you may not all get the races you want.

I know some people are looking forward to a longer race - say 2 hours - at Fowlmead as, with Castle Combe becoming too expensive, Fowlmead is our best chance to have one.  However, the volunteers are racers and, if they're going to travel all that way, quite reasonably want to race.  Running a two-hour race means that we'll have all racers on the track at once, and therefore need non-racers to start the race, call the finish and record the finish order.  Otherwise, there will have to be two separate races, and the length will be curtailed to a maximum of about an hour and a bit.

Do we have anyone prepared to help with the organisating of that longer race?   (Or, if you would rather cover the whole event in your own, you can.)

You should have a timing system to assist you but, I won't be there to run it so you had better either learn how to use it... Evil Smile

Carolyn is coming with me and said she is happy to start/time the race. Chances are someone will get a mechanical or give up so they could write down the finish order if nobody else is around

How Do All,

Can anyone please tell me where the closest camp site for Fowlmead? address and of phone number will be handy if anyone knows.
I seem to recall it being mentioned as right next door in the track reports of LB magazine but no other info.

Thank you in advance for your time and help.
Take care,
Barry ;-)

Any further thoughts on the race format for this event please?

My information from the usual suspects for Fowlmead is an intention to a scheme not dissimalar to that planned the last two years, i.e.:

Day 1
a.m. Short time-trial on the top track
p.m. Middling-length race (two heats) (45 - 60 min) - bottom track

Day 2
Longer race (2hrs) - full track

However, the last depends on logistics for running and recording the races, given that the organisators will be racing themselves (and, this being Fowlmead, on the weather).  The fallback position is two heats, longer than usual (say 1 1/4 hours), but not as long as 2 hours.

I have just booked camping for the weekend - Please note that there are currently only SIX pitches available on the site for that weekend and they are likely to fill up with anglers pretty quickly so if you want to camp get in quick...

a.m. Short time-trial on the top track
p.m. Middling-length race (two heats) (45 - 60 min) - bottom track

Day 2
Longer race (2hrs) - full track

Are there any start times known what time the races begin?
I'm on vacation in England and would like to ride this race

The races should start at around 11am each day - Best to get there well before that to allow time to sign on etc.
Look forward to seeing you there!

Just wondering if anyone going to Fowlmead, that maybe has a van and is staying on the camp site; might have a spare space that I would be able to put my high racer in over night during the weekend please?
No worries if not; thought I would ask just in case.

Take care,

Not sure if we're kipping in the van yet...
One thought though - The people in the bar/cafe have always been really helpful when we've been down there fishing - may be worth having a word to see if campers can leave bikes inside overnight??

It's a pretty secure site I think but may be worth asking...

Current thought's for racing

Sign on 10am each day ready for racing at 11.

Saturday 10 mins + 1 lap on short circuit followed by 45 mins plus 1 lap on medium circuit. Split into fast & slow races

Sunday 1 lap time trial big curcuit followed by 2 hour mass race assuming we have at least a couple of non riding volunteers to organise otherwise 2 x 70 min races plus 1 lap, no time trial.

May change if inclement weather.

Any idea which way round we'll be racing and whether the start is uphill or downhill??

I think the Sunday race should be 4 hours, especially if it's raining.... You can just see the track from where I'll be fishing... LOL

Don't know for sure, but I imagine the same as in previous visits, i.e. slightly downhill for the top track, slightly uphill for the bottom/full track

Not if it's raining like last year, you can't.   Though, currently, the forecast is good

If you are parking at the country park don't forget your pennies for the pay and display, it will save you having to find it from folks or from the cafe. I think it is 2 quid per day.

nonono!  I still in sunny Leicestershire!  Well actually just had a thunder storm, which was nice!  Reminded me of last year at Fowlmead!!  Forecast is not bad maybe a chance of showers, but looks windy, esp' on Saturday, you streamlined bikey types might be doing a bit of leaning to windward!!!

Wow!
A new record for getting results on the web site?? Clap

Many thanks to all the organisers and helpers - A great weekend of racing...
Do you think anybody noticed that some of us haven't done a 2 hour race for a while??

Our little group was going very well for an hour and a half, with the average speed over 21MPH according to my speedo until I dropped off...  Kevin proved to be far too strong for us in the end... Clap

Everything you've ever heard abbout "Kingcycle Bum" is definitely correct... I needed a few minutes walking around before I could move enough to complete the race... Ouch

I'm sure Andrew's journey home was more uncomfortable than mine having seen the results of his mishap!!

Looking like a very close finish to Part Faired is on the cards - best to give them plenty of room on the last lap at Hillingdon!!!!

Amazing results up already well done everyone who helped organise and crunch all those numbers, an excellent 2 days of racing. Loved the ten minute race, absolute adrenalin rush for the first few laps going round corners 4 abreast!. Some great individual performances. Sam Relton first race on a kingcycle, watch out for him in the juniors next season. New member Minoru Mitsumoto on his MK3 moulton with zipper fairing and discs, great first race for someone with a bus pass!. And great 2 hour race by Jonathan W, to name but a few. Well done to Andrew S for as per instructions crashing very close to start/finish line to save the first aiders a long walk.
Time for a bath to cure the megasaurarse!, foolishly entered a 25mile time trial tomorrow!

Great weekend, thoroughly enjoyed myself!

thanks once again to Jon and Anne, Kevin, Sherri et al who made it such a good weekend, somehow even the weather didn't really spoil it, highlight for me was watching Fraser step out from cover with his brolly reaching to the skies just as a huge flash of lightning ripped across the sky, his face was a picture!!!!

As for results, super quick posting, I don't have comments on placings but a question as to speeds.  My computer showed an average of 30.5 mph for the 35 minute race on Saturday and 29.1 for the 2hr on Sunday.  Not sure if my computer is on the blink or speeds are a bit off, did anybody else notice something un-expected?  As I say this is a comment/observation as the placings are what matter!

Well thats my racing over for the season, to those i did not say goodbye to, i hope you have a Merry Christmas and lets do it again next year!

Cheers

I think it could be a track measurement issue... My speedo was showing 20.0 at the end of the 30 minute race on Saturday...

My timings for yesterdays race won't be a lot of use as I spent about 5 minutes walking around in the woods before convincing my bum to get get back on the KC seat... LOL

Sorry we won't be seeing you and Wobbly Bob any more this year... Thanks for remembering to bring back the trophy!!

A great weekend (apart from an expensive few seconds of inattention in the last 10 minutes of it). Many thanks to Anne, Jon, Kevin and Sherri for making it happen.

Saturday's Round 1 results are a bit odd in my part of the forest, although the positions seem right so maybe not worth bothering with. Mike and I were on the same lap but I finished a few seconds ahead (at 14:09.8 by my comp). I think we lapped the next few once so we probably both got 8 laps.

Lap distances: The Fowlmead website claims 1.5km for the short loop (Saturday Round 1), 2.0km for the long loop (Saturday Round 2) and 3.5km for the whole thing (Sunday), which seems close enough to what I measured.

Off to buy more of those lovely dressings that turn weeping ooze into something that looks and tastes like energy gel. There's recycling for you.

Altered the 30 mins and 10 mins to be the same distance as suggested by Andrew (different to previous years!) with 1.5 and 2 km.  2 hour was exactly the same distance as what has been used previously - I have adjusted it from that distance of 2.17 to 2.15 miles (which was the lap distance measured by Alan Goodman on the day)  If anyone has better lap distances, I am happy to use them.

Also adjusted Mike's day one race one result

Thanks to Jon and Ann for organising, and to everyone else who helped out or cheered on! Despite not having done much riding this year (something that was very apparent in the 2Hr race!) I'd some good racing with Claire, DaveT, Neil and Nick at the weekend.

I think it is one of the best courses - even if it is a bit on the flat side ;-) and the BMX course was a lot of fun!

As for distances, my GPS measured the lap distances:

Round 1: 0.85 miles / 1.36 km
Round 2: 1.31 miles / 2.10 km
Round 3: 2.04 miles / 3.28 km

If these are a bit lower than expected, it might be down to my racing line!

Thanks for all that, Kevin.  I imagine Keith's measurements are likely to be the most accurate we have* (and better than we have for most tracks other than the velodromes).  The good thing from my point of view is that Mike and Andrew no longer look to have got suddenly so fast I could never even dream of keeping up.  Instead I can have nightmares about the effort I'll have to put in trying...

I'd like to add my thanks also to Jon and Anne, Sherri and everyone else who lent a hand over the weekend, and to those who've taken kit for transportation to Shrewsbury.

* I'm not sure exactly of the method that GPS sets use to measure speed/distance covered.  If what you're measuring isn't a straight line, is it likely to be a slight underestimate (approximating the curve as a series of straight lines between logged points) and possibly to vary in the degree of underestimation depending on the frequency that points are logged?

With regard to GPS distances (at least for the Garmin) - as you said Adrian, my experience is it under estimates rather than over estimates (circle perimeter is longer than an inscribed polygon).  One thing with changing the distances is you have to be careful comparing your results to previous years.

We have a good holiday in Kent. Also I enjoyed the races. A bit unfortunate in the rain onSaturday but the race on Sunday was great. I just did not realize we immediately began the 2hour race, but you have waited for me. For me there were a lot of faces that were new to mebut a happy reunion of the other riders. I hope the world championship next year Folmead may continue if other countries do not organize.

If there are riders who come on holiday to Belgium and want to race. I have a large meadowavailable. Our races are on the site: www.hpv.be (not in English)

Hi Rudi... You seemed to be going well at Fowlmead! I've just changed your forum status to "BHPC Member" so you should be able to see the member's areas of the forum now...

They are in reverse order except a single photo of Neil. Makes the start sequence quite amusing if you play it as a slideshow.

I may be writing a report of Fowlmead for the next LaidBack Cyclist (unless someone else has already done so). As I'm not aware of everything that was going on (even how far away the guy in front of me was...) I would be grateful for any interesting snippets about the races, racers, bikes, etc that I may have missed.

Please PM anything of interest to 'Andrew S'. Many thanks.
