Topic: First race of the season!

Subject: First race of the season!
Date Posted: 30 March 2012 at 8:01pm

The first stage of the BHPC 2012 Championship takes place this Sunday April 1st (yeah I know - it wasn't me who chose the date!) at the  http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=51.512896,-0.399864&spn=0.006583,0.014741&t=h&z=16" rel="nofollow - Hillingdon  circuit in West London. All are welcome to come along - members and non-members, riders and spectators. The schedule for the day is:

09.00 track open for try outs and practice

09:15 sign-on opens

11.30 race 1 - 20 minutes +1 for slower riders clockwise

12.15 race 2 - 20 minutes +1 for faster riders clockwise

13.00 opportunity for World Championship team to promote their event

13.30 race 3 - 60 minutes +1 for slower riders anti-clockwise

15.00 race 4 - 60 minutes +1 for faster riders anti-clockwise

16.20 - home time

(The points will be split 1:3)

The timing will be done manually, so It is also important that your HPV is clearly numbered. If you have not raced before, we will issue you with number stickers to attach to your vehicle. If you can come along with a family member or friend to count your laps this will assist in the smooth running of the day. Pens, paper and nice spectator-friendly weather will be provided.

If you are racing, don't forget to bring a helmet and chain ring guard. If you've got elbow pads, bring them too (if not, I'm sure you'll be able to borrow a pair for your races). If you've not raced before, a quick read of  http://www.bhpc.org.uk/rules-and-classes.aspx" rel="nofollow - this page  is very useful. There's no need to memorise it - there'll be plenty of people there to help out.

Everyone can enter a 20 min race and a 60 min race. As ever, the allocation of riders to races is at the discretion of the organisers. Riders who have not raced themselves or their newly modified machines before will benefit from the shorter race with a bit of time to fettle or feed before the longer race. Those aiming for the Worlds can use the longer race as part of their preparation (the equivalent race at the Worlds is two hours on a track of virtually the same length)

It's a full day, so it is important that we are all ready on time. There are no penalties for being late to start a race - you'll just end up covering a shorter distance in the same time.

Look forward to seeing you all on Sunday!

Keith Davis

Thanks to Keith, also Heather, Twed and Kevin for all the organisatorial efforts.

And, should any reminder be needed, please, please, not only buy or otherwise obtain a pair of elbow guards but WEAR THEM!

I wore elbow guards for about 6 years before I ever landed on them.  When eventually I had a crash in which they were needed, they saved me from some very serious injuries indeed.

I have in my posession a pair of black gloves - knitted, with grippy patches on the fingers - and a pair of sunglasses - silver/grey plastic frames - that were left outside the clubhouse at Hillingdon.

Let me know if they're yours.

I think we should make elnbow guards compulsory for anybody on an unfaired bike... I'll propose it at the AGM if nobody else does.

well i had an exciting 10 minutes or so until it all went wrong!!  Also others please note; do not, i repeat do not put hot thin fibreglass bodywork in a hot car, then leave it in the car in the hot sun for another few hrs next day, it will come out of car set in the shape in which it was left resting!!

Needless to say I am now not racing again this year, not in extremely Wobbly Bob anyway, well that was a very expensive 10 minutes racing, works out at £540/hr!

Ian,

Sorry to learn of your woes. How about borrowing my Sunrider (Sram Dual Drive set up) for a season? You may not earn too many pointst due to its weight, but will build up your muscles for 2013!

It's a real offer, as I shan't be using it this year, as I'm grounded for a few months following surgery and the best I'll achieve is a couple of tentative rides on the Vortex towards the end of the season.

It even has its own trailer for transportation.

Do you still have the old bob body?
Why not race your Quest XS??
Or make a coroplast fairing for bob?? Or is the chassis bent too?

You may find this vid intresting:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_L_EMVuoPo&list=UURmVCDHIYxwva_jv3gbn-YA&index=1&feature=plcp

If you don't have time to build a correx fairing then I maybe able to knock you up something in a few days for a few nice crisp £20 notes.

Thanks for the offer Lee.  Old body doesn't exist any more (i should have kept it, but no space).  I probably will race the new Quest, i wasn't intending to, but at least there is something from May onwards.  I will mull the current body problem over, maybe make another, but might try heating and flattening the affected bits first if succesful it will be repainted white and carried on the roof rack!

These photos are taken from the starts of the two 1 hour races:

They were taken from a video which is why the quality isn't so sharp. I'm sure there'll be others with better photos.

Came along to watch the racing the other weekend, with my trusty but very slow Yuba Mundo cargo bike and my 'not in the rule book' dog Wilma the Westie.

I had a great time; talked to a lot of you, some about the machines, some about the dog (typical), video'd some of the racing and then left thinking......I want to race, it looks so much fun.....

Now through the Joys of ebay I own a slightly ropey (we all need to start somewhere) trike....am a member of the club have fashioned a chainring protector, dug out my old elbow guards (sadly after my first crash) and am looking forward to racing with you all at Castle Combe (I will be the one whose legs still need to get used the the laid back position)!

See you all at the end of the month.......

Hello Sam, was good to see you and Wilma!

It will also be good to see you at CC, that was my first race 3yrs ago!  Don't let CC put you off racing, I say that because it might rain, and it might be windy, and you might get fed up, best thing is try to stay with somebody to give the race a bit of "spice"! Big circuits can be lonely as we become spread out!

Thanks for the welcome guys....and thanks for the advice regarding trying to stick with someone on the big circuit..will do my best...I am expecting the first few races to hurt....So far my training consists of riding up Kop hill (site of the famous car hill climb) 7 minutes 30 secs up....and then scaring myself silly on the descent (55 seconds)

See you all soon!

Date Posted: 10 April 2012 at 7:33am
Oh No!!!

You obviously didn't read BHPC Rule number 1 Sam...

Using the word "Tr*&ning" is punishable by having to recite the instructions for the timing system 100 times backwards in Chinese.

Around here "Training" is what Dave Tigwell does to get to races... He puts his bike on a train and then sits down with a Pasty....

I tend to agree with Ian about Castle Coombe.... but it is a LOT better if it's run the "wrong" way round... That way the chicane (downhill) gives us ...er... less fast riders something to look forward to every 10 minutes or so... Big smile

Usualy practice is to find the organiser and shout "Anticlockwise" until he says that's what he was going to do anyway...

By the way, do we have an organiser for Castle Coombe yet??

Hi Keith, i'm asking this in public rather as a PM as other people may be interested in the way points are calculated.

I was awarded 148 points yet i was 7th in classs (ok last in class), but shouldn't 7th place get more points?

I feel this may be crucial come Hillingdon 2 !!!

Cheers

Well done to all involved!

Is a Challenge Jester really Sports Class??

If so that's the end of Sports Class (entry level...) I think.

Hmmm, 148 points does seem to be a bit mean for a day's overall placing of 7th in the Multi-track Faired class! But he didn't get 148 points for being seventh - he was seventh because he got 148 points.

A day's points are points are calculated on the placing in each race, and added together based on the point allocation for each race. In this case it was 1:3, or the points awarded in the first race made up 25% of the final score, and the points awarded in the second race made up 75% of the final score. In Ian's case the points awarded reflect that, unfortunately, he had a perfect storm of bad luck:
>Only took part in one race,
>This race only constituted 25% of the overall score
>He (I gather through no fault of his own) did not finish this race.

For those who are not aware, for each class in race the points awarded are 1000 for first place and for everyone else, 90% of the points awarded to the rider in front, ie:
1st: 1000
2nd: 900
3rd: 810
4th: 729
5th: 656
6th: 590
:
The non-linearness ensures that a higher placing within a race carries more weight than consistency - eg a first and third is better than two second placings. Consistency is awarded by taking part in more races, which brings us back to Ian's example. In his first race (20min+1 lap faster) he was 4th rider in Mf class. The other race in the same round (the slower one) had 2 riders who were ahead of him (ie had a higher mph). This put him into 6th place in the Mf class in the first round, so giving him 590 points. He did not take part in the longer race, so did not gain any points for this. So his final score for the day in the Mf class is:
590.49 * 25%   + 0 * 75% = 147.6, rounded to 148.

Simples!

Thanks Adrian,

I think including them would effectively mean that most of those currently competing in unfaired or part-faired should also be included... And that really wouldn't leave Sports or Street viable as seperate classes...

There may well be a strong argument for scrapping Sports/Street altogether at some point...

Must admit all the changes in classes are regarding sports and street that are a bit of a pain in the results.
So was suggesting to Adrian -  maybe you are not entered into these classes unless you request it, rather that trying to work it out on the bike.  So when someone comes in to register they will get entered into the unfaired/etc and only in Sports/Street if requested.  The alternative is to bring your bike with you (in race trim) when registering Wink
