Some of you may know Aurélien Bonneteau from the World Championship last year at Monza, or from Jersey the year before - this friday he's making an attempt to set a new unfaired hour record at the velodrome in Bordeaux. He'll be aiming to better the the current WRRA record of 52.074km by using this very slick looking & minimal bike:

This bike looks faster than the M5 High Racer he set the WRRA record with - but will it and the rider be fast enough to beat the UCI's best effort record (56.375km) set by Chris Boardman?

If this happened, would it be a recumbent beating and upright, or a Frenchman beating an Englishman?

In the lax rules that BHPC have - I'd like to point out that it doesn't even have a brake as pictured - therefore would not be allowed to compete! Wink

fixie :-)

strange shaped chain ring!  I wonder if the shape causes a an acceleration/deceleration as it's a fixie with no dereailleur to take up thetension/ slack, unless there is a tensioning device under the front of the seat out of view?

It's not a fixie, it's singlespeed.

There might be brake blocks (I can't see them) - Where are the levers?

There's a side image of the chain ring here,

and here's a vid of a more extreme truncated ring,

you can see the derailleur moving.

I asked the maker, it has no brakes but as it's for a record attempt where he is the only one on the track, it don't matter, I asked how he will stop, he said just coast and then grab the gaurdrail on the inside

They certainly do! Smile

Another shot of the bike for tomorrow's attempt in it's native environment - along with some controversial pedals!

The big question is, with these pedals, is the bike still unfaired?

bike is, feet aren't, same as wearing an aero helmet on yer feet! Tweaking is what i call it!  are there any rules regarding size of aerodynamic aids and where they are placed??

pushing the boundary!!!
is it functionally needed to complete the task it was design for, i.e. a pedal?
If this can be answered ‘ it is an integral part of the pedal ’ then fine, design to take the force of the rider and spread the load proportionally.
However, “ is an add-on to an existing pedal” if yes, then no the extra part is clearly designed and fairing.
Therefore, imo, does not comply with un-faired to be fair…….. still very nice

Hmm.  Perilously close to UCI-esque arguments such as "disc wheels good; wheel discs bad".

nope, disc have in effect an infinite number of spokes which are functionally needed to hold the rim away from the hub

UCi regs rocks

According to UCI (expensive) disc wheels are ok, because the flat surface is structurally necessary for the wheel; (cheap) add-on wheel discs/covers aren't because they're aerodynamic additions.

To open another can of worms, "spokes don't hold the rim away from the hub: they suspend the hub from the rim".  Discuss.

Only 2 decimal places, hardly worth switching the brain on for calculations like that!

Just looking back at the results - Rob English at Manchester in the 30 mins race managed 52.4km/hr - not a million miles away.  That was in the Hachi - Would have been an interesting attempt
