Fowlmead track has grown since last year!

Is there a definitive measurement for the circuit(s)?

I noticed the avarage speeds in the results are faster than what my speedo said, either my speedo is under-reading or the lap distance for the results calculation is longer than the actual distance.
As for the actual measurement, I'm not sure on that one.
For the 2 hour the results say 35.7mph but my speedo says 34.3mph avg speed, 2.07.58 time and 73.24 miles ridden. I stopped the speedo just after seeing the chequered flag.
Deviding distance by 35 laps gives me 2.09 miles/lap

I am sure that Mike said at the meeting that the track is 3.1km = 1.926 miles, although Fowlmead's own site gives it at 3.5km

Gerard (the timing chap) said it was 3.1KM as well...

I suppose the distance will vary depending on how it's measured, centre of the track, inside edge of the track and the racing line will all give slighlty diffrent distances. As my speedo reading will be from the racing line which "straight lines" some of the curves in the track it would be slightly less than the distance measured at the centre of the track and thus makes 3.5km (2.17 miles) sound about right.

I can adjust the time if we agree on a distance. Fowlmead says 3.5km. Lee's calc gives 3.36km. Still off from 3.1! So does anyone have a better measurement. And as lee points out the racing line of a bike will be shorter than the inner/outer/middle measurement of a track.

Fards has posted GPS data on Facebok that shows it as 3.16KM...

However this makes a trivial difference to the lap length. Assuming a circular track (to make the maths easy) the difference between 3.1km and 3.5km is equivalent to an increase in radius of around 64m. In other words the track would have to be 64m wide for there to be 400m difference between riding round the inside and riding round the outside. A difference in racing line of 5m, which is just about plausible, only adds just over 30m to the lap length.

I recall this coming up in previous years and the conclusion was that the Fowlmead figure of 3.5km was the total amount of track, including the two cut-throughs.

Agreed Andrew - the face that there is more than one radius will mean that it will be a bit more but it will be 10s of metres and not 100s.  My experience of GPS is that it under-reads distance perhaps due to the fact that they normally calculate distance on a flat surface (and don't account for slope) but that would only be 1% or so.  So currently have two estimates of 3.16 and 3.36 (let's ignore 3.5k for now). What was the basis for 3.1km? - anyone got any other values and we can take some reasonable guess?

Another data point for you: I made it 3.265 km (2.029 miles).

Thanks Andrew - that does seem with 4 points the average  is 3.26 - it seems we are converging on a distance then.

I get 3.329km as my average lap over the whole of the 2 hour race. This is a 1 second iterated GPS distance (2.048 miles approx).

Kevin, that tallies as close as makes no difference with the 3.28km from my Garmin last year - and 3.29km the year before (did the track shrink in the wash? :-)  )

Thanks all, results updated with 3.26km lap distance.
