And this is your organiser, wondering what kind of events would be most popular with y'all. Any (sensible) suggestions considered - we aim to please!

I will be present from 10 o'clock. Registration will start as soon as possible after I arrive, and I would like racing to get under way no later than 11:30. We have the circuit until 4pm, so to make best use of our time it would seem to be sensible to have more than one type of race, attendance and weather conditions permitting. How about a one lap flying start time trial, followed by a Zolder-style Le Mans start circuit race?

In case attendance is modest and we decide to run the endurance race as a full-field event (which experience shows is feasible, safe and fun at the Sundorne circuit) would all racers please ensure that their machines have easily-readable numbers at front and left-hand sides - as per BHPC race rules!

How Do All

Just wondering if anyone is passing my way, and might have enough room to squeeze me and my bike in for the Shrewsbury race? I am just off junction 4, M4, 1 mile north of Heathrow. I would be very grateful and happily cross your palm with silver for fuel.
The reason I ask is that even getting the earliest available train from here would not get me there in time to race.

Thanks in advance if anyone is able to.

Take care,
Barry

I'd still like to try it in the opposite direction... It seems better like that when I've raced pedal cars there. I know some people think it wouldn't be safe that way round, but it's certainly no worse than Curborough where we run two-way traffic with just a line of cones down the middle...

The particular issue with going the other way round at Shrewsbury is that riders would then be coming down the slope - I guess streamliners could be getting close to 40mph - through a combination of bends, the last of which would be a https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Sundorne+Road,+Shrewsbury&hl=en&ll=52.725377,-2.718945&spn=0.002258,0.003642&sll=52.8382,-2.327815&sspn=9.229687,14.919434&oq=sundorn&hnear=Sundorne+Rd,+Shrewsbury,+Shropshire,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=18" rel="nofollow - left-hander of something like 70 degrees, and considerably tighter than the preceding bends.

When I was CompSec it was always my judgment that the risk of a rider losing it around that bend made the chances of a high-speed crossover collision too great.  At Curborough https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=curborough&hl=en&ll=52.712639,-1.807841&spn=0.001129,0.001821&geocode=+&hnear=Curborough,+Staffordshire,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=19" rel="nofollow - the radius of the bend entering the contraflow section is much wider and the potential speeds lower.   (Interesting to see that Google's aerial of Curborough appears to have been taken during a bike race.)

For anyone wanting to make a weekend of it, our visit to Shrewsbury (or Shrewsbury, as some people pronounce it) coincides with a big cartoon festival: http://www.shrewsburycartoonfestival.com/%20" rel="nofollow - http://www.shrewsburycartoonfestival.com/ http://www.shrewsburycartoonfestival.com/%20" rel="nofollow - which sounds fun. Some big names from the world of cartoons will be there I'm told!

I guess this may also mean more traffic in the area on Sunday?

I tend to agree with Adrian about running the other way round - streamliners are a bit quicker than pedalcars, especially when on their side on wet grass! I personally think running Hillingdon the other way round is inadvisable as it puts the 'crowd' in danger of the same risk on the last (downhill) bend.

I guess, if no streamliners turn up then it would be okay?

Soooo... Any idea of race format yet... I'm about to start an intensive training program and want to make sure I tailor it to the event and don't peak too early... Big smile

Due to a bit of an unfortunate situation involving suicidal exploding nipples (not something I've generally had to say before), the rear 26" wheel may not be ready in time for the race on Sunday.

Does anybody happen to have a spare rear 26" wheel with disc hub they could bring along to the race for me to use (if I haven't got mine back in time)?
I'll handsomely reward with the finest beer!

I'll be fitting my own disc rotor and cassette, along with tyre, etc. So all I'd need is a bare wheel.

I'll update tomorrow evening to confirm if I definitely need one or not.

Depends very much on turnout, Alan. If there are fewer than 25 people, a whole-field endurance race will be practical and in my opinion preferable to two sparsely-populated races. If that is what we do, I will be doing all the lap counting (assisted by a spotter or two), in which case there will need to be a Le Mans start to keep the whole field from crossing the line at the end of Lap 1 en masse.

Oooh, I'm going all French. Pass me beret Smile

I'd be more concerned about the whole field going into the hairpin en masse and coming out one at a time covered in blood.... Big smile

Thanks Nick - Better put the SPDs in then - no chance of running in Looks!!

Better re-think my drinking arrangements too - In fact I think I'd better put another bike in... Big smile

Please could whoever has the laptop print off some signon sheets and bring them to Shrewsbury? I was going to do it but forgot and now I'm in transit without access to the necessary facilities.

Paul,
I will have a spare 26" rear wheel with me in any case, so if you still need one tomorow for the race you can use it.

I'm still up for doing 1st aid, but am planning on racing in the quest so if we are doing a longer race, someone will need to shout me to deal with any issues.
Longer race suits me, but I am riding 70 mile round trip to get there, so the more relaxed speed of a longer race appeals!

Hi John, I've managed to pick up a spare 26" wheel (complete with fetching pink hub and white rim) so I should be ok. Thanks for being a potential saviour!

As for race format, I'd be more than happy with a longer race. I guess we'll see based on numbers anyhow.

Regarding the Le Mans start, please bear in mind we will have at least one handcyclist taking part tomorrow...
Do we know how long the long race is likely to be??

Race format, arrived at after consultation with the Competition Secretary and consideration of safety issues and what people seem to prefer, with a small dash of EVIL on my part (mwahahahahah):

there will be a 10-minutes-plus-1-lap circuit race, for 30% of the available points

followed by a 1-hour-plus-1-lap circuit race, for 70% of the available points

Fast-twitch and slow-twitch types should both have an event which appeals. We do lots of time trials, so a 10-minute thrash will make a nice change, won't it?

There will be no more than 15 riders on the circuit at one time (so there will be "fast" and "slow" races if there are more than 15 riders present, and "fast", "middling" and "slow" races if more than 30 riders present - in which case the endurance race will need to be of somewhat lesser duration).

If a Le Mans start is used, handcyclists will have the advantage of starting already mounted (but I am inclined towards a "normal" start for the shorter race anyway).

Le Mans style cannot work for Streamliner bikes, and will also handicap anyone trying to tape the streamliner up. I will be very annoyed if I have to handicap my start as I get Sarah started .....especially in a race as short as 10 mins......please be practical!
Besides ....running in cleats on a potentially wet track will probably keep Fards busy later in the day.

It does at Cyclevision...

However, since this is the second representation I've had against a Le Mans start, since you didn't get much notice of the idea, and since we aim to please... there will be a normal gridded start for all races tomorrow.

Even better than you expected, eh Alan? Clap

Many thanks to Barney, without whose capable help I would have been lost. We look forward to seeing George in action on his smart new bike (but purrrlease, do something about its wheel disc colour coordination!).

We ended the day three watches short of a clock shop. If you have arrived home to find that you have an unexpected stopwatch about your person, please let us know here on the forum.

Results have now gone to the Competition Secretary for vetting and subsequent posting, after which the wrangling may commence. Although if you all did your thing with the stopwatches properly, there won't be any, will there?

It looks like the fast/slow split wasn't far wrong in the end... Top 5 all from the fast race (and Sarah would have been up there as well if she hadn't had a mishap...)

Hope you're ok by the way Sarah...

My thanks to Nick, Barney and crew for today's arrangements and apologies for wimping out of the 2nd race and retiring cold and feeling a bit old!

I'm starting a campaign for Spring Weather Payments as I found the recent pension increase insufficient to fund enough layers to cope with Shrewsbury's micro climate .......

I shall borrow Mrs B's mink undergarments for Rhyl, just in case ..... Cheers!

Thanks to Nick, Barney, et al, for running the event so smoothly.

It was good to finally get back on the bike for race reasons (highlighting my lack of fitness!) and great to see everyone. The results (speedy work) look good to me.

Anyone brave holding a camera in the cold and get any pictures?

By the way Alan, congrats on the intro of the ratracer, I assume we'll be seeing you graduate to the fast race now!

Could we have a volunteer to write a race report for Shrewsbury? I meant to put the word out before the event but Friday brought surprise news of my possible imminent relocation down south and so it got neglected.

Cheers

You had a great race, Alan, particularly since that was your first major outing on the Ratty (or so you claim Wink). However you looked to be enjoying it far too much so next time it's definitely the fast race for you.

Steve -
How about taking short 'my race' pieces from several people and mashing them up together? It might be a bit less daunting than offering to write a definitive report on the entire event.

You were all wrong ....Sarah was fine.
I pushed so hard in both races.....I blame Alan & Joe for the temptation (not my stupidly competitive nature...no...no).
I need to write cheques my body can pay

Thanks to all for that one, I enjoyed myself, in retrospect, half an hour into that second race wasn't fun at the time.

I really like those short cranks... I think Mike may well be right about them... Big smile

Send that man to the Fast Race.  After last year, I don't think my ego can take being so outpaced by him.LOL

Since the Alan+Ratty combo is clearly out of my league for the moment, I'm focussing on something (only slightly) more achievable - Twed+Hurricane.

I know some people felt the hour race was a bit long, but having started off too fast (trying to keep with Alan and Derek on cold legs - IDIOT) I warmed up after 30mins and was still going okay at the finish - that's at least one vote for keeping long races.

Thanks to the organisers who kept it fun through the cold wind and drizzle.

If it was easy, it wouldn't be any fun.

I'll try to bring the Kingcycle or Hurri to at least one event this year... I'm already missing our scarily close races of last year... Rhyl was absolutely brilliant last year... highlight of the year and I lost that one!!!

What a great view! And a great battle between you and Sarah - she's better than you on the corners Evil Smile.

lol
pretty much anything is better than the quest around that hairpin.

Pity I didn't have a decent recording from the front camera, (I've got the first 27 seconds!) I was closer to you for most of the latter part of the short race than she was too me.

They're even better up steep hills IMHO Alan - put them on your road recumbent too!

Yes, we really enjoyed this one - she so nearly got you! Smile

Thumbs Up to Sarah for being so patient and considerate when overtaking slower machines.

Do you/could you have a monitor on the, er, dashboard for a rear view, Fards?

Great video Ian! The 3-wheeled drifts and tail out action/corrections must have held your concentration out of the hair-pin. Excellent viewing.
P.S. I couldn't help myself ....I watched your Jumped video .....when you stormed back past the other rider I was grinning....widely.

Any idea when the championship standings, etc will be getting updated on the main site?

Lol no dashcam monitors (I'd have stopped and got them working if so) just mirrors.

I did wait for Andrew in that last hairpin, which is why he managed to out sprint me in the 10mins race.
Was a choice of dive in front of him (like lap 2) and block him till I got out, or risk the usual 20ft of space he got on me coming out the other side of the hairpin..
Being the nice person that I do have a tendency towards (not worried about getting over excited at all and stacking it, no no no no) I coasted up behind and let him go first, then didn't have enough vroom left to catch him on the sprint up to the finish.
Wish the front camera had recorded the race, would have put a nice perspective on it (and the wheel lifts, which look nothing on rear cam, but felt a lot higher looking forwards!)

We generally allow two days for quibbling before posting up the definitive results and championship places on the website. That said...

...the Quibble Room is now CLOSED. Any quibbles sent in now will not count but you may still be charged by your network operator.

The Scroll of Results will now be sent to Thee Keeper of Thee Results to be officialised and certificatified and should appear on the website http://www.bhpc.org.uk/Data/Sites/1/archive/events/events13/shrewsbury-13.html" rel="nofollow - here in due course, or possibly in the fullness of time.

That sounds like a great idea, Andrew. So how about folks send me a quick couple of lines of their most juicy and daring experiences for a Shrewsbury Mash-up. Any takers? I'll accept anonymous allegations too...
