If you've heard that Quibell Park has been damaged by fire, don't worry - the track is open and usable and our booking on 7th July is going ahead. However facilities will be much reduced as this messsage I've had recently explains:

Dear customer,

Quibell Park - Demolition Work

We are writing to all our customers who have event bookings at Quibell Park Stadium to clarify what the current position is regarding the facilities and access arrangements prior to and during the demolition of the stand within the stadium.

Please be advised that although there will be some disruption within the ground, we can confirm that all event bookings will still be able to take place, however there will be limited facilities and in particular there will be no shelter areas for those children or adults participating or spectating on the day of your event.

You are more than welcome to make your own arrangements to provide portable shelters or tents if you wish, but the erection and dismantling of these will need to be carried out by your own staff, as unfortunately we will be unable to provide any additional staffing resources to assist with this on the day.

In terms of other facilities available on site, there will be one male and one female toilet block and one portacabin which may only be used for changing purposes by small groups.

Other than the above, there will be no other facilities at the ground.

Please do not hesitate to contact me on 01724 297256 should you require any further clarification or have any queries regarding the demolition work.

Yours sincerely

Andy Bagshaw
Sports Facilities Manager

Please note that the gates to the stadium will be open at 10:00am. If you aren't familiar with Quibell Park there is no parking outside the site, except on the roadside, so please try not to arrive too early.

Right then...

John and Sam Relton have kindly offered to help so we'll do this one between us...
We're keeping it simple and the races relatively short to ease the RSI on those with stopwatches... Big smile

Registration/sign-on will CLOSE at 11:00...

11:30 - Race 1: Fast race for 20 minutes +1 lap

12:15ish - Race 2: Slow Race for 20 minutes + 1 lap

13:00ish - Race 3: Fast race for 40 minutes + 1 lap

14:00ish - Race 4: Slow race for 40 minutes + 1 lap

Points will be awarded on a 3:1 split in favour of the longer race...

If anybody is still feeling keen we'll run a "Devil" just for fun...

Weather forecast is that it will be very hot (28 degrees!) so please don't forget your sun-cream and bring plenty of fluids (I don't know if there is drinking water on site).

We'll make a decision on the day depending on conditions, but we may reduce the second race from 40 to 30 minutes (as much for the comfort of timers as riders...)

Yup - just a reminder that there is probably no stand at Quibell any more so nowhere to get out of the scorching Lincolnshire sun. I suggest we give a prize for the best full English breakfast cooked on the track.

Do you happen to know if there will be power for the laptop Andrew?
I'm assuming the little room we used last time may have been damaged as well... Cry

I was told the current situation is still pretty much as descibed in Andy Bagshaw's message, which doesn't mention power anywhere. We still have the car adapter and I shall make sure the laptop is fully charged.

Many thanks to John and Sam for doing most of the work...
Shame only 15 people turned up... I blame Andy Murray!!

Results will appear shortly as soon as I have the spreadsheet from the laptop... I took a copy on a flash drive but the flash drive appears to have enjoyed the journey home in a van without aircon even less than me!!!
It was on the dashboard and is now Dead

Sorry I was roped into helping set up and dismantle all stuff for the village dog show (which despite the weather had 19 entries), which my "missus" was running. Plus other mundane duties.  If I had shown up I doubt I would have been fast after a gruellingly hot and hilly 310km ride yesterday!
Maybe, people are fed up with going round in circles - me, I love it!

Mike's average speed is correct by the way... In fact it's a little on the low side compared to his speedo which showed over 30!!!
The erm... slower riders Embarrassed making him take a longer line probably accounts for the difference...

I was just going to say surely Mike's average in Race 2 is wrong! Blimey! He should have a go at the Hour Record.

He took it easy in the 20 minute race so that he could try to break 29MPH in the 30 minute race....

He said nobody had done that in a race outdoors before...

True. He was only half a lap ahead of me in the first race so I thought I could catch a tow as he came past in the second race but not a chance. 30mph is spectacular for part-faired class - well done Mike Clap. I'm staying unfaired.

I know Mike is a bit wrinkly, but 70! really?

And some speed indeed!  He should take up bike designing as a profession!

Ian,

As another wrinkly 70 year old, I could do with some career advice too. I have been trying my hand at training snails to sprint, but find the adrenaline rush a bit too 'heady'..... Any ideas?

Posted By: Yanto
Date Posted: 09 July 2013 at 9:00pm
Ah, well I was going to say try slugs, more aerodynamic see!  But then adrenaline surge might be even more pronounced!!

I think potting shed beer brewing is more your style, but we'll call it a micro brewery and charge A LOT!

A friend of mine tried training snails to race.

He had the idea of removing their shells to improve the power to weight ratio but it only made them sluggish. Wink

That Business Guru Perry, is a genius! Beer is not my tankard, but Poitin is my tumbler .... Can't use the potting shed Ian, its where I keep the wife's mink -vicious little critters. Confused However, my Sunrider Velomobile is vastly underutilised, so I'll convert into a mobile still. With a new 500watt motor fitted, it will outrun the local Biking Bobby - It will be like a remake of The Dukes of Hazaard, but with Wurzels! Cheers matey, do come round for a slug or two!

I'm down Yeovilton way on Tuesday night, stopping in a place called Martock (Ash House Hotel), do you know it?

Yes. I have only been there to film a wedding a couple of years ago. It had a good menu albeit a tad expensive (for an OAP!). Plenty of character, not 'over renovated'. Quiet location. Pleasant grounds. The Red Room dining room was smart. Can't remember much more. Plenty of pubs around if you don't want formal eating e.g. Royal Oak at Over Stratton..... Will you have a chance to call in? I'm 10-15 minutes away....

Alan
