Date Posted: 24 April 2019 at 10:25pm
This is the place for discussion about Round-2 of the BHPC championship race season at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit in the village of London on Sun 5th May.

Sign-on starts at 10:00
Racing commences at 11:00

Race Formats:
Slow Race: 30min + 1 lap (anticlockwise)
Fast Race: 30min + 1 lap (anticlockwise)

Slow Race: 30min + 1 lap (clockwise)
Fast Race: 30min + 1 lap (clockwise)

Alan Goodman has agreed to help with Organising, but if there is at least one other person who could offer to help then that would be greatly appreciated (note helping with organising doesn't mean you can't race...)

Note: This has now become round-2 (rather than round-3) of the 2019 BHPC championships season due to the double booking at Bath. I'm currently working on securing 12th race venue/date which will be spliced into the calendar later in the year...….

I will be there with the first aid kit. As this will be my last race until Hillingdon in October (unless the "missing" race fits in my overcrowded calendar) so could someone please take it to the other summer meetings?

Yes indeed - The next opportunity to blat your steed around a nice, smooth, traffic-free bit of tarmac will be at Hillingdon on the 5th May... As always we will be taking membership renewals at sign-on but it's always busy so you can save us all time by getting your membership sorted online first. Members race for just £7 - Non-members are always welcome to take part of course at a cost of £10. Please check the rules if you haven't raced before - Basically wear a helmet and cover any pointy, sticky-out bits. No motorbikes.

Apologies all I won't be able to make it down to Hillingdon on Sunday - my daughter Amelia (11) landed on her knee awkwardly in her gymnastics class and is now in Tameside hospital getting a type III tibial spinal fracture fixed (basically a ligament has pulled a piece of bone off the top of the tibia). Whilst she's quite exited about getting some titianium pins and being part cyborg, its also wiping us out as a family and some things are having to give.
It's a shame as I was really looking forward to racing at the superb Hillingdon circuit again. There's a chance that the other LSBU Battle Mountain rider Noah will be there so please make him feel welcome :)

Hope Amelia gets well soon, sorry you won't be able to make to Hillingdon Russ I'm sure you will be missed by the faster riders, and the slower ones as well.

I won't be there either as I will be having a lie in after a long day completing a 400km audax on Saturday.

Good luck with that Ian, I would need an emergency bed after 400k 😁.

Hi

May I take part in the event on Sunday 5th with my velomobile, on the basis that I'm a complete novice to racing?

I see that there are two types of racing, slow and fast.  Please forgive what may be a daft question, but what does that mean?  Is it as simple as slower people in one race, and faster in the other? Looking at what your members do (400km rides) I'd be very happy in the 'slow' race!

Many thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,
You'll be more than welcome!!
Yep, it's just that - We split the field into two groups as there is a huge difference in speed between our slower and faster riders and we like to keep juniors bimbling around at 10MPH away from the streamliners and velomobiles that may well be doing 40+ in places...

Which velomobile do you have and what sort of average speed do you think you're likely to do?
Generally velomobiles would go in the faster race but nothing is set in stone...

The slow/fast distinction is mainly a safety thing, usually to reduce the speed differential (or, on velodromes, differences in the machines' ability to cope with banked curves) between riders on the track at the same time. As a result, it tends to be all the fully-faired machines and the faster part-faired/unfaired riders in the fast race, and the slower riders on part-faired/unfaired machines (including many that aren't really designed for doing well at racing) in the slow race.

If you look at some http://www.bhpc.org.uk/Data/Sites/1/media/events/events18/12hillingdon/index.html" rel="nofollow - previous results , you can get an idea of what sort of speeds people are achieving on what machines in each group.

The results all get lumped in together when calculating points, so it only really matters if you're somewhere near the boundary, where it can make a big difference in terms of whether there's anyone useful to draft and how much overtaking you have to do.

I'd generally expect a velomobile rider to be in the fast race, but you might be safer in the slow group if it's your first go. An experimental thrash round the track while the organisers are getting everything set up may give you an idea of what sort of speed you're likely to achieve. I find my speed on the track can be quite different to riding on the road, as you can be more sure about the surface quality and lack of conflict with traffic.

In my experience as a novice, lack of confidence in tight corners limited my speed more than my power output did. I got a lot faster over my first few races.

Hi Alan

That's great.  Many thanks.

It's a Velomobile DF, and I suspect it's better to go in the faster race given what you've said.  Average speed is probably around 30 - 40 kph on a smooth road, so not as fast as the 40 mph, but closer to that than the 10mph.

Hi Mike,
Yep! Your DF is likely to put you at the front end of the fast race...

Look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
You will need towear a helmet but obviously no issues with chain guards on a fully faired machine so just turn up and have fun!
I have allocated Race Number 46 (it's always worked ok for Valentino Rossi...) on our race software.
If you could display that on the front and sides of the DF that will be very helpful - You will lbe issued with a tag for the timing system before we get going.

I will be coming along tomorrow, is it possible to register for both slow races? I'm on an un-faired high racer, and looking at speeds from previous events looks like this is where I would fit. Got helmet and have 3D printed a chain guard.

Probably!
The races will be split in to two groups once we know how many we have signed on and who has turned up.

Can't promise which group you will be in at this stage but if it's your first race on an unfaired bike it will probably be the slower group.

Numbers stay with you forever as long as you race at least once a year by the way.

My first race, that was a a lot of fun! Smile

I was being rather scatter brained when I left and managed to leave a black fabric cool bag on the grass outside the club house with a couple of things in it, nothing of value, including a metal water bottle, a protein drink shaker and some isotonic tablets.

I went back when I realised I had left it but the club house was locked up and it wasn't there. I don't suppose anyone picked it up?

I guess I could try contacting the Hillingdon Admin as it might have gone into lost property when the club house was locked up.

I don't remember seeing anything there when I left so I think there is a very good chance somebody picked it up - I'll copy this to the Facebook group as may be more likely to be seen there....

A quiblet, I was on a Moulton APB, not a TSR. Insignificant to most but not the Moultonisti in the club!

Is the track length for the speed calculation smaller than last year? I would have expected everybody to be at least 0.5 mph faster

Hillingdon results are now finalised and quibbles resolved namely:

1. Stuart Glen now noted as riding a Moulton APB
2. Liam Goodman's bike reclassified as O/P
3. The incorrect circuit distance (spotted by David L'Hostis' keen eye) now adjusted from 0.93 to 0.95 miles, which means all the average speeds go up (so everybody is a winner!!!!!).
