Following an Unfortunate Incident I am in need of a replacement gear-hanger for my Challenge Furai. I believe Challenge stopped trading some time ago so I'm hoping that someone with the necessary skills could make one for me.

These are front and side views to give a rough idea of what I need:

I also have detailed measurements available, plus the original part if required (though it may not survive being posted). The crucial dimension, between the mounting holes, is 14.0mm (centre-centre)

If anyone thinks they may be able to help, or knows someone who can, then please reply here. The bike is essentially useless without a gearhanger so I'm keen to get it fixed.

Andrew Sidwell

http://gearmechhanger.com" rel="nofollow - gearmechhanger.com has 690 different designs. The problem is finding which would fit using just photos with no dimensions.

The original is alloy, I'm guessing CNC-ed rather than cast.

They have changed owners but they are still trading from a Facebook/Twitter page. Good luck getting parts from them though, they have always been reluctant about supplying parts. Could try an email and see what kind of reply they give. I had a reply when I asked about an old version of the chain guide wheel they used to use. I don't remember their email address unfortunately.

All the best.

Andrew, it occurs to me you could try posting a wanted ad in  http://en.ligfiets.net/advertisement" rel="nofollow - http://en.ligfiets.net/advertisement  or/and  http://www.marktplaats.nl/a/fietsen-en-brommers/fietsen-ligfietsen/m1554743283-stroomlijnpunt-met-bagageruimte.html?c=9b26ed2a557deff636f4f8b9c5b7a618" rel="nofollow - http://www.marktplaats.nl/a/fietsen-en-brommers/fietsen-ligfietsen/m1554743283-stroomlijnpunt-met-bagageruimte.html?c=9b26ed2a557deff636f4f8b9c5b7a618

Hi Andrew

After my unfortunate incident with the derailure going into the wheel at Redbridge I had good support from these companies. I sent photos and I think measurements and they suggested a replacement which I bought in hope. Both designs fitted. These were the email addresses I used:
Andy Bray mailto:info@gearmechhanger.com" rel="nofollow - info@gearmechhanger.com

Dereks Cycles mailto:derekscycles@gmail.com" rel="nofollow - derekscycles@gmail.com

If you need really precise 3D dimensions then is a 3D scanner available? Is this a service the above companies could provide? Or could you post the broken hanger to them to see if this helps them find a replacement.

Thanks for all the ideas. I have now obtained a hanger from GearMechHangers.com which looks like it should fit once I've drilled new mount holes in the dropout.

I've also posted a wanted add on ligfiets.net in case anyone happens to have an original replacement.

I haven't yet tried contacting what is left of Challenge. I remember Bikefix having trouble getting spares from them some years ago, even when they still fully operational, so I'm not hopeful of a successful outcome there. If the GMH hanger works then I'll probably leave it there, unless some friendly Nederlander turns up with a genuine part.

Hi Andrew
I remembered I got the email address of Challenge from their web site but it takes quite a while to get an answer. info@challenge-recumbents.com In case you want their web site. http://www.challenge-recumbents.com/contact.php" rel="nofollow - http://www.challenge-recumbents.com/contact.php
All the best.

Their web pages do say Elan on them so I would say yes. Says it's Challenge by Elan since Nov. 15th 2012.

Things are looking good: I sent a query to info@elan.cc and got an answer just 10 mins later offering to send me the required replacement. Super impressed.
