I've had my tags for ages and they were working fine at Hillingdon. I think it was just one or two that didn't work.

Annoyingly, most of the older tags don't have versions written on them.
I've made a note and will write some new tags for them just in case. We can test their current tags on the day, and if they're fine put the new ones back in the pile to be rewritten for someone else.
If anyone else is suspicious about the state of their tags, please come and test them before the race! Saves a lot of hassle in the long run.

I'm sure I read somewhere that racing on Saturday kicks off later than we normally do, can that be either confirmed or corrected?

Have we decided how we're weighting the points for Saturday? 20:80 33:66 or something?

20:80 sounds reasonable to me

Right, an innovation: We're going to try running Saturday's time trial like a proper grown-up cycling club so that we can use the RFID tag system for timing. This means that the computer will count people down to their pre-determined start time, and record their finish automatically using the tags.
As such, riders are responsible for being at the start line in time for their pre-determined start time. If you're not there, the clock starts without you. To make things simpler, I've allocated start times at 45 second intervals in ascending order of race number (with one exception, so that Andrew and I aren't riding at the same time), so it should make things easier to queue up in the right order.
Times here are stopwatch times in minutes and seconds, not the time of day. We aim to start at 1:30PM, but may start a few minutes later if necessary. The stopwatch time should be displayed on the race clock throughout the time trail.
| Race# | Name | Start Time | | 1 | Steve Slade | 00:01:00 | | 6 | Ian Perry | 00:01:45 | | 7 | Neil Fleming | 00:02:30 | | 18 | David L'Hostis | 00:03:15 | | 20 | Neil Hood | 00:04:00 | | 26 | Pete Watson | 00:04:45 | | 36 | Liam Goodman | 00:05:30 | | 38 | Colin Rose | 00:06:15 | | 47 | Alan Goodman | 00:07:00 | | 48 | Maureen Goodman | 00:07:45 | | 54 | Jack Watson | 00:08:30 | | 66 | Jochen Farwer | 00:09:15 | | 68 | GST | 00:10:00 | | 77 | Colin Wait | 00:10:45 | | 82 | Jonathan Woolrich | 00:11:30 | | 86 | John Lucian | 00:12:15 | | 92 | Shaun Pallister | 00:13:00 | | 96 | Derrick Tweddle | 00:13:45 | | 99 | Dave Minter | 00:14:30 | | 102 | Andrew Sidwell | 00:15:15 | | 104 | Heather Fortnum | 00:16:00 | | 127 | William Tulett | 00:16:45 | | 132 | Jeffrey James | 00:17:30 | | 137 | Gerry Chaarlwood | 00:18:15 | | 149 | John Williams | 00:19:00 | | 150 | Ian Squires | 00:19:45 | | 163 | John Greed | 00:20:30 | | 165 | Tim Macdonald | 00:21:15 | | 168 | James Coxton | 00:22:00 | | 183 | Sonja Wittig | 00:22:45 | | 204 | Alex Pratt | 00:23:30 | | 211 | Don Shackley | 00:24:15 | | 220 | Bob Wood | 00:25:00 | | 221 | Zac | 00:25:45 | | 222 | Paul Markey | 00:26:30 | | 223 | Erin Fleming | 00:27:15 | | 136 | Kim Wall | 00:28:00 |
A copy of these times will be available along with the fast/slow race allocations.
(If it all goes horribly wrong we'll fall back to the manual method, but if this works it should make things run a lot more smoothly, as the computer's much better at coping with riders arriving in quick succession than a person with a stopwatch.)

Do the RFID tags have a minimum distance between each other? I'm toying with having a small plastic "flag" with a tag either side, so separated by 0.5mm, or will one tag on one side of the tag be sufficient?
|
Posted By: Kim
Date Posted: 03 June 2021 at 5:39pm
|
Yes, they don't work when they're on top of each other, in much the same way they don't work on metal/carbon fibre. A single tag should be sufficient in those circumstances (the plastic's completely transparent to radio, and they work fine from 'behind'), but if you're going to use two I'd suggest one at the top of the flag and one at the bottom.

Thanks Kim, when I say "flag" I mean something just slightly larger than a tag, so I think I'll try just one tag option and see what happens.

Results are up, but something appears to have gone a bit wrong with the points (Slash isn't placed for Sunday's event). I'm far too tired to wrangle data without making things worse so it will have to wait.
ETA: It appears that Slash was so fast he lapped himself and finished in 0th position, which confused the scoring software.
Obviously we've found a bug in the results-merging program. Will look at it tomorrow.
ETA: I looked at it. It's a failure to initialise a variable problem. Will fix tomorrow.

Thanks all, great to see everyone today. That's the fastest fast race I think I've seen so far - third from last even with a 25.1mph average for an hour I was overheating and under-hydrated, but Jochen, David and Andrew were a class apart today... Russ

Or possibly a class together, given how the gap between them was too small for the tag reader to correctly determine the finish order. (They were obviously taking inspiration from the close finish in the slow race...)
It was a pretty fast turnout generally. When allocating the races I basically put the obviously fast people in one group, the obviously slow people in the other and the middle half of the field were allocated almost at random. It could easily have been the fully-faired race and the part-faired/unfaired race.
The Preston track really is lovely when there's no slime on the corners...

Other anomalies I've seen, Neil Hood hasn't got any points for MF, Sonja has points down for MF when she rode a bike and James Coxon/James Coxton are the same person.

Many thanks to Kim and Andrew for all their organisating and timing efforts! Really enjoyed the weekend and if anyone knows whether Don in the Quattrovelo pipped me on the line in the slow race yesterday, please let me know. I was trying to unlap myself but it was so close on the line I have no idea whether it worked or not. Nice to be able to sprint(?) for the line though. Many thanks also to Ian for allowing me to use his Wasp in that race while my Ross was U/S.

Good, thanks for that.
The James Coxton/Coxon change is because he came and told me I'd spelled his name wrong and I fixed it in the later results. Presumably I transcribed it incorrectly at some point and when faced with two spellings assumed the one with fewer characters was likely to be a typo. SeriesMgr has a helpful feature for aliasing different spellings of people's names in anticipation of this sort of thing, so that should be fixable without having to go and mess with the Hillingdon data.
Neil and Sonja's classes are as they were entered in the shop, so nothing mysterious there. Neil mentioned his Mf was missing yesterday, but with all that was going on I didn't spot the Sonja bike discrepancy. I note that several people didn't select answers to all the class questions, which I picked up while processing the sign-on.
Keep them coming...

Right, fixed the bug in the merging software (amusingly, it was effectively thinking Slash had tied with himself, because a DNF rider in a previously-processed class had the same finish time).
Sorted out James Coxon's name, and updated Neil and Sonja's classes. You might need to reload the page to see the changes.

To follow up on this, it worked astoundingly well. The software worked as intended, and we somehow managed to get everyone into a queue without any of the anticipated cat-herding problems. The only real issue seemed to be someone going on bips of the DNS rider in front of them, which was easily fixed in the results. (Important to note that setting a rider to DNS doesn't in itself change anyone else's start time, which is probably the correct approach if we're telling people their start time in advance.)
Thanks again to yostumpy for providing a reliable wireless router (which made this practical), and to everyone who managed to be in the right place at the right time.
Next time we can use a shorter interval between riders (I chose a fairly conservative 45 seconds to give us plenty of time in case of unforeseen issues), which means we can get through a time trial much more quickly and efficiently than before.
It also opens up the possibility of doing multi-lap time trials, which would be impractical to time manually without a lot of human attention. And in principle we could do flying starts, though this depends on everyone congregating outside RFID range until after their turn, which might be possible at somewhere like Darley Moor, but not the likes of Hillingdon or Stourport.

The new time trial system is a great piece of work by Kim and a big step forward from the Organisator's point of view. Instead of multiple people with stopwatches and bits of (often soggy) paper the whole thing can be run by one person with absolute accuracy. It also makes great use of the old Dell tablet we've had for some years, displaying not only the next rider's countdown but the names of the next five riders so you can check the line coming up.
So a big thanks to all the time-triallees on Saturday for being most un-BHPC and getting themselves in number order to make the new system work so well.
