Natalya showed me the recent video on Facebook.  Don't suppose they'll have straightened some of those corners out by September...

I’m looking forward to racing there in a pedal car on Sunday.
It looks like a great track for that. Tongue

Yeah, looks like it should be great fun for pedal cars and unfaired trikes.

I spent a few hours marshalling at yesterday’s pedal car racing on this circuit.

The track is narrower than any BHPC circuit that I’ve raced on. Comfortable for two trikes wide but very snug for three without risking grass-cutting. Lots of corners, which will be fun for unfaired bikes and trikes. Faired machines should doublecheck their brakes and lean angles. Slower riders should stay aware of faster cycles coming up behind them. There are lots of opportunities to close the door, inadvertently or otherwise. Sprinting to nip past a slower rider between corners will be advantageous.

Little elevation change but asphalt as smooth as I’ve ever seen.

There is a pay and display parking machine but ignore that. In the leisure centre/ gym there is a tablet where you enter your car registration for free parking.

The centre sells coffee, ice creams and packaged snacks but you’ll have to head down the road towards town for something solid to eat.

Hereford does look interesting. One point that could stop me going is that height barrier on the car park. StreetView shows it closed and limited to 7 feet. Is this likely to be open on race days?
Thanks

Hallo, everybody... as part of our intensive döstädning campaign (death-cleaning - it's a Swedish thing) I have a few items to offer and could bring them on the train to Hereford, probably on the Sunday - or they could be collected from Shrewsbury if you live within range:

1) a pair of 28-hole Velocity Aeroheat 406 rims in near-new condition
2) a pair (I reckon) of Fastback System side panniers, like new - used once on a trike tour of Brittany, ISTR
3) a 65 tooth 130BCD chainring with bolt-on guards attached, lightly used for racing

They are all *FREE*, freeeeee (to BHPC types) I tell you... if you need photos, e-mail me on:

enn pee underscore marshall at yahoo dot co dot uk (that's enn for Nick, pee for Paul, no spaces)

Alan, please feel free to move/duplicate this post elsewhere if you think it more appropriate. Judith and I look forward to seeing lots of you in September Smile

If anyone has any information about the venue to add to LWaB's useful comments then please post them here and I'll put them on the Race Day page. In particular we like to know about:
  • showers
  • disabled access
  • whether the track is usable in both directions
  • any other good or bad points

I can't think of any reason why the circuit wouldn't be ok in both directions.
We may need to split into more heats than usual as the track is relatively narrow.
Facilities on site were good (as well as the toilets in the Sports Centre they opened up a small toilet block near the track for the pedal car race).
I don't know about showers or disabled access to be honest, but it's a modern facility so I would expect at least disabled access to be ok.
They were very helpful and actually allowed us to take vehicles through a gate from the car park so that we could park near to the track, so I think we should be able to offer that for wheelchair users at least.
It may be something of a "leveller" because some of the faster folks (particularly velomobiles) will find it challenging.

I am pretty sure there are showers and changing rooms in the leisure centre.

Does anyone know if they will open the height barrier to the carpark for those of us with tall vans or bikes on roof racks? The barrier looks low on StreetView (sign says 7 foot) and having been unable to get anyone at Halo Leisure to answer their phone, the response to messaging them below wasn't particularly helpful.

Thank you for your email. I have located information about our car park facilities at Hereford Leisure Centre.

Car Park Information

We have an automatic camera system that recognises your number plate on entry and exit of our car park at Hereford Leisure Centre.

Up to 4 hours FREE parking is available if you have:

  • Active Halo, Active Together or Active Hereford Membership
    OR
  • A child paying for Gymnastics Lessons by Direct Debit

And it gets better, you can also park for FREE for up to 4 hours at Halo operated Car Parks at Leominster Leisure Centre & Bridge Street Sports Centre too.

How to get FREE parking…

You must register your van registration number at Hereford Leisure Centre reception. Be sure to activate your FREE parking on the tablet device otherwise you will be fined due to the automatic camera system.

You only need to do this once – it will stay active for the duration of your membership.

Height Barrier

Regarding your specific query about the height barrier, I have found that the car park at Hereford Leisure Centre has an automatic camera system and a pay and display meter. However, I was unable to verify if there is a height barrier and if it will be open on 20th and 21st September.

I DO NOT KNO

Thank you for contacting Halo Leisure.

Kind regards,
Healthi - Halo's digital assistant

Has anyone got experience of this car park in this regard or have we got a phone number that someone answers to get the official line?

Ultimately if they don't open the barriers, I won't be able to attend and I was really looking forward to this one.

Thanks

Colin

Organiser needed for Hereford!

Would anybody like to volunteer to organise at Hereford?

Note that the organiser gets to choose the race format, the only constraint being that the timing team/system need to be able to handle it.

The track is relatively narrow and twisty and we *think* it will be ok in both directions.

Cross post from FB

@kim @natalya

HEREFORD - following Judith Swallow  having to pull out and in the absence of anyone else volunteering, I don’t mind taking a crack at it.

I’m aware that Kim and Natalya need consulting regarding TimeMistress capacity, and they aren’t on here (I’ll cross post to the BHPC forum).

It’s a new track so no previous formats have been tried as I understand it. It’s narrow and twisty.

We’ve got 17 entrants, 2 streamliners and one velomobile, and lots of trikes. Do we run slow and fast races or just combine? We’ve got about a 50/50 split where people might naturally be in the slow or fast race, but that also means only 8 or 9 in your race.

So, for those going how does this sound:

Saturday:

Race 1:
30 mins +1 lap clockwise

30 mins + 1 lap anticlockwise

Slow/fast/combined tbc and perhaps subject to timings.

Race2:
5 lap sprint race in each direction?
split between fast and slow, (ie 4 total for timekeepers)

Sunday
Race 1:
Time trial (maybe 2 laps?)

Race 2
1.5 hour  longer race

Thoughts? Attendees please comment below

Thanks. Mark

Sounds reasonable to me.  I think we probably need to split the races, as the track is narrow.

Thanks Kim. So, subject to your approval (ie, how much time you need to set up and between races), here’s a potential timetable. I’ve swapped the days for sprints and TT due to time constraints as we need to run the earlier races separately for fast slow.

Saturday
10.00 Track available to us

10.30 Track open for sighting and practice

11.00 30 mins +1 slow clockwise
12.00 30 mins +1 fast clockwise

13.00  30 mins +1 slow anti clockwise
14.00  30 mins +1 fast anticlockwise

15.00 1 lap flying TT

16.00 depart (assume we can leave timing tent setup overnight?)

Sunday

10.00 track access
10.30 warm ups
11.00 5 lap sprint slow clockwise or anti
11.30 5 lap sprint fast clockwise or anti

13.00 1.5 hour endurance opposite direction to sprints - fast and slow combined
14.30 end
15.00 Help pack up
15.30 Depart

Works?

I suggest that if we're going to stick everyone in together for the 90mins, we start the race off with a neutralised lap like we did at the worlds.  Seemed to work well to prevent entanglements on the first corner...

Okay, I've put that timetable up on the Race Day page.  Can tweak as necessary.  I assume we'll decide on the direction for the TT and Sunday's racing once we've got a feel for the track on Saturday...

Thanks Kim, much appreciated. Neutralised start for the long race sounds sensible.

Judith on FB gp making some comments after her pedal car races there suggesting overtaking spots might be hard, and a bit of uncertainty about how well it will work in the opposite direction. I think we can suss that out when we get there.

I’ve put out a message to Martin to see if he thinks his velomobile will make it round the corner in both directions!
