Kicks off at the weekend with an unprecedented three BRITISH teams taking part.  A preview may be found at here:  https://jnyyz.wordpress.com/category/hpv/" rel="nofollow - https://jnyyz.wordpress.com/category/hpv/  courtesy of Viscount Admiral President Timelord Jun Nogami.  This link has in the past been the go-to place for results though since the event now has a spiffy new website –  https://whpsc.org/" rel="nofollow - https://whpsc.org/  – this may not necessarily be the case this year.

I'm heading off at Audax o'clock tomorrow, that I might assist with setting Stuffs up on Friday and Saturday; the Automatic Diary –  https://automatic-diary.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow - https://automatic-diary.blogspot.com/  – is, natch, the optimum solution for news, goss and inflammatory remarks about [“Redacted” – Ed.]

Achievement unlocked: I am in USAnia and in an hotel rather than a cell.  Onwards to Battle Mountain tomorrow, or today if you're reading this in BRITAIN.

Reports suggest that Team Northern Monkey have successfully entered USAnia, extracted Seventy-Seven from its lair and have crossed most of California with an ETA of later today.  Fortunately they’re still far enough that I was woken this morning by jetlag rather than Barney.  No news as yet of the other BRITONS.

Edit: could a Nice Administrator please unpin the 2022 thread?

Qualifying runs this morning for most of those present, though not Liverpool coz the machine wasn't ready or Cal Poly coz the machine was locked in the Civic Center.  DNS for Adam Hari, who says he needs more practice after having not even seen the bike for a year and for the assorted Toronto riders with mechanical issues on the bike.  DNF for Ellen van Vugt due to video glitches a mile and a half into her run.  Three different models of Milan velomobile with five riders in total all ran OK as did the remaining bikes.  Storming 75.03 mph from François in Altaïr 8, which may well be a record for the short course.  Solid 61.04 for Russell in Seventy-Seven and a Hat-earning 51.97 from Slash in the Beano.  Full SP at  https://jnyyz.wordpress.com/2025/09/07/whpsc-2025-sunday-am/" rel="nofollow - https://jnyyz.wordpress.com/2025/09/07/whpsc-2025-sunday-am/

Weather forecast for this evening looks pretty good and François is clearly not in a mood for building up gradually...

Wind did not read the above.  Only four takers this evening, viz. Slash, François, Russell & Peter.  Russell fastest with just over 70 mph but no wind-legal runs chiz.  Mornings are looking better than evenings for wind, at least according to yr.no.

Much better wind Tuesday morning - wind-legal runs for everyone in the qualifiers save Karen Darke in ARION 8.  It picked up when we moved out to the 5 mile start but the one wind-legal run was a storming 85.84 by François in Altaïr 8.  Wind doesn't look too bad for the remainder of the week but temperatures are supposed to be taking a dip for the next couple of days before going up again towards the weekend.

Tuesday pm barely worth the effort and petril.  All runs into a brisk headwind; Ellen fastest with a 57.26 from Slash with 54.56 and Karen with 38.50.  No takers at all for the third scheduled heat when the wind was actually starting to die down.  Forecast for Wednesday looks a bit poor with the possibility of rain in the afternoon, so we're going to have the World Premier of the London South Bank movie starring Russell Bridge as himself, Barney Harle as Foghorn Leghorn and Mr Larrington as Sir Stirling Moss (decd).  Red carpet on order from Mega-Global Big River Corporation Prime.  Bring your own popcorn.  Trailer for the fillum:  https://iconictv.co.uk/thefastestbicycle/" rel="nofollow - https://iconictv.co.uk/thefastestbicycle/

Overnight rain b****red off leaving Thursday morning clear if a little on the chilly side - 6 C when parked in the shade.  Wind a bit bobbins early on for the qualifiers but was mostly OK for the runs on the full course.  Natch it wasn't when Slash banged in a 60.56, but it was for Russ' new PB at 74.23 and François' new PB and European record of 86.96 mph.  Pleasing to report that Adam Hari finally managed a half-decent run at somewhere over 651 with the Kevlar crash panels still in place.  Amusing to report Barney wandering off to the five mile start with the keys to Cobus Burger's truck2 still in his pocket.  And we had a visit from a horsey:

Horsey!

Which fortunately stayed on the right side of the fence.  I've got the right hat but my l33t horsey-wrangling 5k1llz are this: 0.

1: Timing FAIL; by the Timelord, not the system.
2: Parked at catch.  Six miles away.

Drove out to the course with very black skies looming in the distance, dropped off the timing kit, set off for the start.  By Mile 4 it was tipping down.  By the time we'd reached the start, turned round and gone back to timing it was raining there too.  Executive summary: no runs Thursday night.

Had a whole flock of horseys this morning and thought we might have to get Dr Chief Starter Calvin Moes to scare them off with his drone.

Cool but sunny this am; David van Erd in Orange Bullet fastest with 69.21 as Russell and François sat this one out.  61.42 for Slash but the wind was non-legal chiz.  Wiebke Magers narrowly failed to cop a 50 mph Hat in Wild Bill Thornton's Milan RS.  Again. 49.84 mph.  Ethan Elbaz binned Eta Prime at V > 60 mph a mile and a half from timing; rider OK, bike somewhat beaten up but the Toronto PSO's reckon it fixable.  Possibly not by this evening thobut.

Reports of Eta Prime's fixability may be exaggerated.  No wind-legal runs at all Friday pm with François deciding not to run just as the team was about to pop the lid on and send him down the road.  In spite of the wind Russ banged in a 74.63 and Slash a 57.76.  David van Erd in Orange Bullet equalled his fastest run from last year - 70.32 mph.  Both Erin and Claire were just relieved to get Cyclone down the road unscathed.

Nice gesture by the IUT Annecy team:

Les bons vins de France

Bottles of Fitou presented by chef d'equipe Guillaume de France (centre, in hi-viz) to the Politburo Organising Committee - Adam Hari, Arnold Ligtvoet, Marieke Ligtvoet, Joyce Lem, Larry Lem, Calvin Moes, Jun Nogami.

Confirm that Eta Prime is out for the duration; Ethan says that even if they could get it back on the road he'd not improve his PB from last year so Toronto are concentrating on Cyclone for the final day.

Rubbish wind to start with until Harrison Walker's run in the fourth heat which earned him a 55 mph Hat with a 57.34.  Better for the final set: 88.07 for François, 76.11 for Russ and 50.42 and a Hat for Wiebke in Wild Bill's Milan RS.  Only David let the side down with his personal best 72.94 being the only run with Bad Wind.

Roadkill antelope at the five mile marker.  Clearing dead things off the road is above my pay grade but some of my fellow volunteers got a rope round the carcass and dragged it into the brush for the circling vautour to have for lunch.

Morning debrief delayed as some of the crew attempted to rescue a cow from the muddy pond near catch, resulting in Battle Mountain Mike Engel's truck falling in a ditch.  Bad swears as Arnold Ligtvoet and Cobus Burger failed to extract him but the rancher came by and got him out eventually.  Cow rescued successfully.

One more session...

No new World Record chiz.  François ran early when it’s warmer but there was Evil Wind and he only did 74.98.  Another wind-legal V > 75 mph by Russ, a bangin' 76.75 by Guillaume after Bill Thornton sportingly gave up his starting spot and Slash rounded off the week with his best run; 63.58 mph, wind-legal.  Bedtime.
