The instructions are fine and it isn't difficult to use... although I think the timing system may have been a factor in putting people off volunteering to organise... At the moment it is being left to the same small group of people all the time.
The BIG problem with the current system is that you don't know if it has failed (whether because of user error or system malfunction) until it is too late... Which leaves people trying to work out the results for several weeks after the event and arguments breaking out on the forum...
A lot of people have put a lot of work into it and have done very well to get it to where it is...
But until we have a way of checking whether it is working during a race (an audible beep as a bike crosses the line?) I don't think it should be used at least without stopwatches and manual counting as a backup...
If people want to use it if and when they organise races then that's up to them...

True, but if people don't try it it will never get easier.
I don't think it really fails - or has done, individual tags have had problems and we recently identified that tags are waking up strangely but have adapted the software.
Not sure whether a beep solves that - you need to test it with the light at the start and then it should be good to go - the alternative (even AMB doesn't tell you unless you have a laptop connected at the track - perhaps fine in nice weather, but a bit iffy otherwise. Beeps were taken out because you couldn't really hear it so .... And interestingly the first time I have heard this statement made.
True - it is always up to the organisor and always will be.

Ah the fun we had with a plastic sheet borrowed from ICE to cover up our Dutch friends and their equipment when it rained at WC2012...
The pedal car system beeps and that works well during night races in particular... They always seem to spot when laps are being dropped... There is a real-time display as well and for this season we have been able to see live timing on mobile phones as well...
![]() When we started using the timing system I really hoped that one of the main benefits would be eliminating all the quibbling about results on the forum for ages after each event...

Well if we raced at night you would probably see the lights on the tag. As for a real time display, great but who is going to take it there. The pedal car have people who will run it rather than people who try and pick it up on the day. Like most of this stuff - you really need to try it once before going to the event.

I agree.
The beeps aren't really for the pedal car drivers to hear - Somebody will usually be monitoring it at trackside. Each team provides a volunteer to take a turn at helping out with that sort of thing.

Yep!
And the fact that I'm still working at the moment is not good!
I'm hoping to have registration open by 9:30ish all being well. 10 at the latest.

Tim and Chris are coming up from Cornwall, but I'm not sure if the faired trike is coming...

Many thanks to the two Alans (now it's "have you registered?" from me".....and it's "have you registered?" from him), Heather and Claire for today. Shame more didn't turn up - a very entertaining track.

Anyone on any machine including maniac streamliner pilots would've had a heck of a laugh today. The only track that compares is the bottom circuit of Redbridge, which me and Slash had a great ride on last year. Well, with the reduced turnout we did have time for two longer races which is unusual.
You'll all be waiting for the snaps while I finish the film. Don't expect much though because all the riders were racing when I was, and I can't photograph and race at once! Anyone make contact with the guy with a digital thing? He was at big hairpin in race 2 (part 2). |
