The World Championships of 2007 are to take place in Namur, Belgium, over the weekend of 27th-29th July.

At least, I believe they are; but I can see nothing to confirm that belief on http://www.hpv.be/

Am I looking in the wrong place?

There is not all that long to go, and we want to book accomodation close to the event venues before it is all snapped up.

It seems to have moved to somewhere called Hannut. This is the event website: http://www.hpv.be/wk/starten.htm

There's not much there but a map yet. Nice logo though.

Thank you, Andrew. It would have been nice if they had publicised this... We very nearly booked a hotel in Namur last night, but didn't because we wanted to know which side of Namur the events would be, so as to avoid riding through any more city traffic than necessary.

Namur - capital of Wallonia; a pleasant university town handily placed on the edge of the Ardennes (popn. 107,178), with a citadel, a famous abbey and a selection of attractive hotels and excellent restaurants. Seven pages in the Rough Guide to Belgium; easy to book accomodation there via the Internet, in English.

Hannut - er, where? Popn. 14,500; it does have 10 racing and touring cycling clubs, and it is (thank goodness) in the French-speaking region. No mention at all in the Rough Guide to Belgium. The nearest town to Hannut that is indexed in the Rough Guide is Namur, and that is about 30 miles away. How on earth does one go about finding somewhere to stay in Hannut?

Peeps - just got this today via my investigative links . . .

No panic! As you might know we were invited by the handbike association for the wc, in the south part of Belgium . They were offering a lot, we were only asking for save racing. Handbikers race for money , we for fun and glory… To cut a long story short: we’re organising the wc ourselves now on the former F1 circuit of Zolder: same date, one location, easy to control(http://www.circuit-zolder.be) Possibly the handbikers will join us.

Schedule: Friday 200 m , 1000 m

Saturday tt, fastest lap,, 45 min crit

Sunday: 100 km

It will be a silent weekend: no cars on the circuit, no disco.  No more waiting, very soon all will be on our website.

Spread the word,

See you, Jan Van Dyck  Hpv Belgium

Kudos to Sherri for turning up a better e-address for Jan than the one I used.

The Zolder circuit looks very good. They have plenty of cycling events there. I have asked Jan for accommodation details ASAP.

I have also put in a suggestion to run the 100 km on time rather than distance. This is better suited to a widely varied field of HPVs.

So that's the Zolder which is about 55km NW of Maastricht? Not anywhere near Namur? Thank heavens we were too lazy to book accomodation for Hannut last night... I think we'll hold fire until we're sure the event is staying put!

Still, if it's anything like Zandvoort, the circuit should be tremendous fun to ride Smile

Or if it's anything like Castle Coombe it'll be a total dog: just you and featureless miles of burning tarmac, chasing tiny dots on the far horizon in the teeth of vicious headwinds. Or maybe memory is playing tricks on me and it really was hugely enjoyable.

Latest gen from Jan on HPVWC2007 is:

Hello Richard,

1. vehicle classes: we tend to go for faired and unfaired, some people would
like a third categorie: tailfairing. It will depend on the participants as
well: if you only get one faired lady, this is not a competition. Age:
insurance for hpv in Belgium: from 15 to 70 . If you're younger than 15 you
need a cycling license from your own country. Age and insurance is still
under discussion with the KBWB , the UCU reps in Belgium. Insurance will
cover personal insurance and against third parties. If we get enough
tandems, handbikes, ... We can make an extra class. If there is one faired
tandem , it will be classed as a faired vehicle. Next week we hope to put
the rules online. Last year the French were very strict on using tail
fairings or not, changing was not allouwed during the wc, but the
tailfairings didn't make the difference: it was the gearing: going down
coming close to 100 k/h, next day climbing at a speed of 5 k/h. Putting on
extra gearing was allowed. Commons sense is would we would like to use to
determine the classes. This discussion has been going for years, I know...
2. Camping : 20 euro per tent (25 sm), electricity 5 euro, campers allowed.
Youth hostel nearby(http://www.vjh.be/)Bokrijk. We hope to arrange a pasty
party every night. It was only yesterday we switched from Hannut to Zolder
(we took an option on the circuit some time ago because we were not happy
with the way things were going in Hannut/Namur).There is other accommodation
available but we haven't got all the prizes yet.
We put you on the mailing list, so you will get all the information asp.
----
Note: go to the web site http://www.vjh.be   click on English language and then Bokrijk on the list of hostels. Looks attractive and reasonable.
----
Let's pitch in and help the Belgians to have a nice event. It will be a good tutorial for us!

Rob had already decided not to go because no information was available about exactly where things were happening - by this time last year we had all our travel plans and accommodation firmly settled.

Not the organisers' fault if other people's plans changed on them late in the day of course, but we hate dashing round at the last minute sorting these things out.

Still nearly three months left, Carol! ...and booking hotels in Belgium seems to be very easy via the Internet if you are not of the... er, camping persuasion. Although the only one in Zolder itself is fully booked already.

My problem is that my accursed employers insist that I book all my leave on August 1st for the whole of the following year. Which means that  we are committed to going to Belgium, wherever the races are.

Naturally, the more Brits, the merrier Big smile

Edit: we've booked, anyway - we are staying here:

http://www.booking.com/hotel/be/domein-bovy.html

...and it looks as though they have more rooms available (and a benign cancellation policy, should it come to that!)

As for ferries, Norfolk Line from Dover to Dunkerque was by far the cheapest of those we looked at: £63 return for 2 adults in a car seems very cheap to me Smile

(...but, weirdly, they don't want to take you if you don't have a vehicle)
