iirc the height restriction was taken out several years ago, to suggesting someone ride a bike with min seat height such that they might not reach a good footing at stop is perhaps not good practice. |

I should point out - a point that I have made in the past - for Street and Sports - it is up to the competitor to argue or state at registration - these are optional classes with more vague rules and not defined. So it should be at the point of registration - otherwise we get into changing the results for the season at the end of the season!

I agree with Kevin entirely...
For future events my opinion would be that the Ratracer SL is certainly in the spirit of Sports/Street class as it was designed for road use... I wouldn't (couldn't safely) ride Ratty on the road... |

Thanks everyone that clears things up for me a bit, I've no wish to alter any results for this season but will try and remember the info for next year. Alan I think that picture could be my bike when it was with a previous owner, pre my 'incident'

The final results and, possibly more importantly, their effect on the Championship tables are now available on the website - many thanks Kevin.
Thanks also for reiterating the point about classes. I agree that the SL looks as if it qualifies for Sports and Street so Martin should claim it at his first race next season. The seat-height rule was removed from the definition a year or two ago in favour of a less formal spec which was more in keeping with the spirit of the class, but it's still true that some machines ('standard' Ratracers among them) are too low to be 'suitable for use on the open road'. Rattys fail in numerous other ways too - there's no rear brake, nowhere to put lights, and locking them up outside the shops is virtually impossible. |

Mine has a rear brake... operated from the same lever as the front one (both drums)... And the brakes on my one actually work!!
![]() I believe this is because it's the machine Mike used for training, presumably on the road... I'm nowhere near |

The Ratracer "classic" has SA drum brakes front and rear. All other versions I've ridden have pretty much no brakes at all, which is just as well since applying the one that there is on the front usually seems to result in me falling off.
I rode mine on the road a couple of times. Height wasn't too much of an issue, since I chose a known circuit of quiet roads, and all the junctions were left-turns. However, real-world road surfaces - and this was about 8 years ago before all those hard winters and spending cuts - resulted in vibration so severe I could barely see where I was going, and the bike started to fall apart after about 12 miles.

I used to use the Wyre quite a lot on the road, including in traffic, as it's pretty close to the ratty I'd say they are usable on the road..
Just need to angle it across the lane at about 45 degrees to be able to turn left at traffic lights. But then people tell me I don't ride in much traffic.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhXnOWcJSU8 Edited by fards - 03 October 2013 at 4:18pm |
