In the 2007 dates thread 11th August is described as Shrewsbury and social rides. Is there racing in Shrewsbury on the Saturday as well as in Wolverhampton on the Sunday? What sort of length and terrain is wanted for the social rides?

That weekend is planned on having racing and social rides both days, we want some non-racing members to turn up, it should be a great weekend!

happy to discuss route options  (or several options if needs be), anything from 30-50 miles is usually okay, nominally with at least one pub stop.

Bearing in mind the new Shrewsbury circuit is on the (mostly for that stretch) HPV friendly bit of sustrans R81 (east of Shrewsbury) it should be pretty easy to use the Sundorne stadium as a start finish point.  (the stadium is on the grounds of the old manor at Pimley, just North of the River in case you didn't know).

Of course, cruising down to The Quarry and posing on 'bents on a sunny August Saturday afternoon doesn't make a social ride, but deffo makes a social event :D

I was originally thinking an easier ride is a circular upto Hawkstone,
or a harder route down to Bridges via Pontesbury.

The Sunday ride could start from pretty much anywhere in between Much Wenlock and Wolves (unless you can think of an alternative Stokes Barn at Wenlock is the most likely accomodation).
Little point to starting a ride at Aldersley. :/

Thanks for that Nick.

gNick, put me down for the August weekend. The only doubts I've got are:
* I've not been to either track, so I'd have to depend on Andrew/Ian to organise the marshaling
* Given my travel arrangements, I'm not sure that I'm the best person to bring the equipment on Saturday / take it away on Sunday

Aldersley is a steep Velodrome. I've still not had it confirmed that we can have it yet by the management there (they are crap).  But they've said yes in principle (it's taken some serious negotiation to get it at a sensible price).

Thanks for that fards. It looks like there'll need to be a marshall on the corner after the hairpin to keep the local wild life at bay (looks like a black cat - did it bring you luck?)

I had been thinking about routes round Shropshire for the August weekend when I read the article on the country's best climbs in this month's Cycle magazine. One of these is the Long Mynd. Would there be any call for a circular route including the Long Mynd and Stiperstones as a possible social ride? The Stiperstones Inn does a good lunch. Easier alternative routes would be available.

Andrew, I've jsut realised I never phoned you, sorry!

My 2nd optional was to be over that way, via bridges, but getting back to shrewsbury isn't too pleasant unless you come back via Condover.

Btw do you know of any decent campsites, Stokes Barn is fully booked, and most of the others around Shrewsbury don't have showers, except the one at Montford Bridge, which is the wrong side.

Did a run out that way on Friday but was not brave enough to do the Long Mynd. Came back through Condover which was fine.

I'll make enquiries about campsites. About how many pitches will be needed?

We did a social tour round Shropshire some years ago, including the ascent of the Long Mynd, a pub with it's own brewery (Smile) and a nice campsite. I will consult my notes for some clues as to the location of the latter two or perhaps gNick remembers?

Pub was probably the Three Tuns at Bishops Castle. About 25 miles from Shrewsbury down A488.
