As I'll be in France rather tha Reading on the 18th, I would appreciate any feedback on whether visitors (Players or Spectators) turn up as a result of press articles placed this week and flyers in Colleges.....quote from wyndrake

Reading 18th June 2011:

Everything you need to know (except any bits I've forgotten):

Location:

Palmer Park Sports Stadium
Wokingham Road
READING
RG6 1LF
Map here

Weather:

After the track being throughly washed on Friday evening, the weather will be great - not too hot so those with full fairings will not over-heat, but with a bit of a wind to keep things interesting!

Race kit:

This will magically appear . . . (we hope!)

Sign-on:

The ferry gets in at 06:00, so we'll be there super early to setup the sign-on. The sign-on will be in the car with the sign-on sign parked to the left of the reception building. If you can sign-on as soon as you arrive, and bring something resembling the correct change (£7 for members, £10 for non members) this will help loads with the smoooooth running of things.

Assembly & Fettling:

This must be completed by 12:00 at the latest, so that you are ready to . . .

Warm up on the track:

The track will be available from 12:00 onwards, and you are encouraged to check your timing receiver box thingy is working and get some warmup laps in once the timing loop has been laid.

Racing:

We're aiming to make the most of the velodrome with an action packed value 4 money schedule:

12:30-13:30 Fastest lap (out of 3) 20%

Each rider will get 3 laps, points awarded will be based on the time of the fastest lap. The inner part of the track will be used for this, and the riders will be started individually. The outer part of the track can be used for warming up and cooling down.

13:30-14:30 Heat 1 race 45mins+2lap 60%

Mass start, and 45mins of riding + the length of time it takes for the leading rider to get back to the line. The next time they cross the line they (and everyone) else gets the bell, and the next time after that its the checkered flag and the race is finished.

14:30-15:30 Heat 2 race 45mins+2lap 60%

Same as above

15:30-16:30 Devil takes the hindmost 20%

Mass start, and on every lap, the last rider to cross the line is taken out of the race. The only rule is that you can't overtake the last rider.

While you're not racing you may be asked to help out with marshaling, herding, waving things or checking things off a list - your help (no matter how small) will be much appreciated and, of course, incredibly rewarding!

Finish:

We lose the track at 16:30, so its had back your timing receiver thingy and head home. We will extract the results and get them posted as soon as possible as we head up to Scotland for theee birthday of the year!

Looking forward to seeing you all there - don't forget your helmet, and a chain guard if you've not got a nose fairing.

I have been in brief contact with Keith within the last week and, yes, they will be organisating, but I haven't had details of their programme of races.  They have been on the road, of course, attending the Worlds, which won't have helped their ability to post details.

They have now landed back in civilisation and posted a very comprehensive program of racing!! ClapThumbs Up

Fingers crossed for the weather (especially the wind) behaving itself...

Just one comment on the race format... Those warming up/slowing down on the outside of the track will need to be very careful to avoid the peole on "hot" laps when they cross back to the middle, especially as most of us only have mirrors on the right...

Thanks for the comprehensive race programme. I would not recommend a devil though, we have tried them several times in the past and they always end up a disaster and arguments. Last time I remember us doing one was at lancaster, I stacked it on the bend just before the finish and while I was getting back on the bike someone (slash?) passed me and we could not make our mind up what should happen thus we ended up scrapping points for that race.
If we go by the rules, everyone should have stopped dead on the track and queued up behind me while I picked up my bike, lowered the gear, got back in it etc, Of course I was just around a blind bend thus the leader would have to have braked very hard to stop in time after noticing me there and possibly caused a pileup. It's unworkable.

Unfortunately due to problems at work that turned up this afternoon, I will have to be going to work over the weekend so the timing system will not be making it to Reading. Unless someone knows some really good magic?

I'll try to make it down to Hog Hill though the best laid plans of mice & engineers and all that...

Just a thought… What about sticking the timing system on a courier for a pre-12 delivery on Saturday at the Velodrome??

One of the few perks of stepping forward to organise is that you get to choose the race format...
I think Devils have always been ok when we've run them on velodromes??
I agree they don't work very well on tracks with bends, largely because of the rule regarding not overtaking the person in last place... There was a disasterous Devil at Curborough a couple of years ago with one of the juniors (Sarah??) doing a superb job of going as slowly as possible and everybody else having to bunch up to avoid lapping her... There was very nearly a pile-up going into a corner...
Great fun to watch but I was really glad i wasn't in it!!

Hmmm, I've been reading some good reports about the timing system - but that all amounts to nothing if it can't be at a race!!! Is Alan's suggestion a go-er, or can it be left with, or picked up by, someone who is coming down to Reading?

Any help will be much appreciated,

Keith.
