I would love to race Shrewsbury the same way round as the pedal car boys (it's a lot better...) but it has been said that it would not be safe to run at the pace of Slash and Howard that way around... Casey's 18th brthday party the night before so I am fairly unlikely to get there... I'll probably stick a bike in the back of the van on Saturday in case I wake up in time...

I've no idea, having never been. Do I need to check my brakes or something? I saw the circuit lap from Fards, but gives little impression of the speeds, or the gradients.
/Anyone who saw Hog Hill races can probably say that both Slash and I have a reasonable command of our bikes... would it be more challenging than that or Curborough, say? Edited by Yowie - 05 September 2011 at 10:51pm |

There is a possibility that somebody losing control on the way into the hairpin could end up on the wrong side of the track and meeting somebody coming out of the other side of the hairpin... Personally I don't think it's any worse than Curborough but I know that others disagree and that is why we have never raced that way around (apart from a 1 lap time trial...)
The hairpin is likely to be challenging in the streamliner I would think whichever way around we go...

Hairpin is fine on a Davies streamliner doing a left hand circiut. Can't comment on one with a right hand lap.
However, I would strongly reccommend only doing left hand laps for a full race. "Normally" there are a set of uphill Esses to the start/finish line and a fairly gently downhill left onto the back straight. The other way round it is downhill through the esses and then a moderately tight left towards the hairpin. This is not a problem flatout, the issue is that if it goes wrong there is a 12 inch strip of grass between you and the oncomming people on the back straight. Not a nice thought. Anyway I will unfortunately not be there so I'm rulling myself out of any vote on this. Have fun, Neil |

As Neil F said, the problem with running clockwise would be the left-hander after the esses, downhill. Anyone losing it there is likely to end up on the opposite track, going the wrong way. If I remember correctly, there's even a tempting, tarmac-ed gap in the grass for someone in trouble and panicing to aim for. The prospect of a head-on between two riders at a closing speed of maybe 60mph isn't one I like to think about.
Also, clockwise, the hairpin is lacking in run-out though the worst case there is a rider going into the fence at 15mph. Not quite so scary, but something best avoided.
I'd put clockwise racing at Shrewsbury into the "too risky" box.
